Save-game issue; possible corruption

Post » Sun Jun 14, 2015 7:50 pm

I'd explain myself, but I came across a forum post from gamefaqs several years back about what seems to be the exact same issue.

(Apparently, I don't have permission to post links. I'll provide the url if it's requested, though, if that's okay.)

Basically, if I try to load my saves under most circumstances, I get a billion error messages, which aren't always the same, but the bulk of them are about quest journal entries. Sometimes the first one is something about skooma. I'm guessing that's to do with the fact that in some of the saves I'm carrying skooma, and thus probably irrelevant. But, you know.

I've only tried it with my last ten or so saves. If I run the game -- not the launcher, but the game itself -- as administrator, I can usually (but not always) bypass the error messages. The one time I actually just clicked through all thousand or so of them, it had the same apparent effect. The game seemed to play fine, and I even opened up the journal to see if something wasn't displaying. But when I tried to save, I got the error mentioned in the link.

The only cause I can think of (initially I thought it might be to do with my installation path going weird, because of the not-finding-files thing and the fact that I noticed my Morrowind folder missing from my gamesas folder. However, I'd actually moved it to my main drive myself, and I quickly remembered the reason upon moving the folder back, launching the game, and running headfirst into a snowflake error) is my save names. I have probably a couple hundred of them at this point, all named "a", because that's the easiest key to hit. Maybe making too many saves named the same thing causes issues? In any case, making a new save not named "a" doesn't make a difference; it still gets the error.

Oh, and I even tried autosaving, by resting. That worked -- I didn't get an error upon saving -- but when I tried to reload, I did. It was a different error from the other two, I think. Different dialogue box, even. I think it'd cropped up a couple times previously, but it's hard to remember what went where.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

First of all, you can add the line AllowYestoAll=1 in your ini file so that you can skip all warnings at once, instead of clicking 100 times through them all.

It would help if you posted the contents of your Warning.txt after seeing these errors.
Because we can't just guess at everything you're seeing.

What version of the game are you using? Steam, disc?
Are the expansions installed?
Did you install the game in the correct order? Morrowind->Tribunal->Bloodmoon

But it sounds like you need to move your Morrowind instillation. Any OS more recent that WindowsXP needs Morrowind to be moved out of Program Files to avoid all sorts of problems.

Are you using mods? That is also a huge factor we need to know about.

Right. Sorry. Not sure how I forgot to add that info.

I'm using the Anthology disc edition. No mods. Completely vanilla. Both expansions are installed, and I think I did it in the right order, but I can't be completely sure if I didn't mix up Tribunal and Bloodmoon.

My Morrowind installation is in my main C: disc. Always had been. I just forgot that it was there because of the snowflake error, so I moved it back. But then I ran into the snowflake error again, and moved it to C: again.

Here's the warnings file. Okay. Well, I can't find the attach function for some reason, but here's everything that was in the file:

I thought you said there were "a billion" warnings?
Do you get these when you start the game, or when you try to load your save file? It would be helpful to see those.

But anyways, a warning that says "bad form" means that the save itself file is corrupt, and it's useless now.
This is rare, but it does happen.
Don't use quicksaves, and even autosaves can be unreliable. Just use hard saves, and make a new file occasionally.

If you continue to get the problem with all new save files, I would uninstall and reinstall the game.

There were. For whatever reason, they didn't show up in the file. It's something like "questname info in string (x) was unable to fine string name", with a bunch of different things in "x". Looked like it was a reference to all possible journal entries? The post I'd mentioned went into more specific detail, but since the forum wasn't letting me post links, I didn't want to be getting around the rules by just posting a non-linked URL. I will if that's alright, though.

The warning in the file was the one I got when trying to reload the autosave. Normally, I only use hard saves. Well, autosaves when they happen from sleeping, but typically I just make a hard save. When I load a normal save, I get the whole bunch of warnings. I might try loading saves from much earlier, and see what happens. I did briefly just start a new game, and that didn't give me any warnings. Although I didn't try to save, as you have to go through char creation before you can do that. I might check that later.

But do the billion warnings appear when you start the game or just when you try to load your save?
There's a difference in what type of problems are happening based on that.
If it's just when you start the game, let the warnings happen and then exit Morrowind before loading a save. The warnings should be in the warning.txt now.
