Save game load error

Post » Mon Dec 12, 2011 7:32 pm

I could use some advice from the more experienced. More and more frequently I am experiencing a crash on load where a Windows error message pops up during save game load that says that the C++ runtime library has been terminated unnaturally by Oblivion.exe. At which point all I can do is hit enter and I return to the desktop. This has been an issue from time to time for the whole time I've been playing Oblivion, about a month or so. I had thought it related to going too many places between saves, or making too many quest log entries too quickly, because those activities seemed to aggravate the situation, but just yesterday that changed. I am currently cleaning out Fort Alessia(?) as a level 5 in a fairly new game. I have killed all but 2 of the marauders in the Fort, and have a save that loads at this point. Almost anything I do after this, going down to loot the bodies for instance, will result in a save that crashes on load with the C++ runtime error mentioned above. No quest log entries or new locations at all.
It appears that the only thing in my Oblivion setup that uses C++ is OBSE. I am running maybe 25 mods, most of them off the top 100 list at TESNexus, and most of them use OBSE. I have tried running Oblivion through the launcher instead of OBMM, which doesn't load and run OBSE. When I do I can loot and proceed and do whatever, then save the game and that save will load without error, as long as I run Oblivion through the launcher. Running Oblivion through OBMM again, which does launch OBSE, will result in that last save erroring out on load. Note that the mods are all still enabled both ways, they just don't work without OBSE.
I have previously posted a question about this on the Nexus Forums, to which I got one reply in three weeks. That reply, while he was sympathetic, wasn't very helpful, so this is apparently not a real common problem. I'm hoping someone here can give me at least a hint about what could be causing this, or better yet some idea of how to fix it. I can post my load order if that would be useful.
At this point my options seem to be to play Oblivion without OBSE and the mods, which is pretty much a non-starter, or not play at all. Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

I have no idea. But with that out of the way...

Have you run Windows Update recently? If not, maybe try that, and you could end up with, for example, a C++ update of some kind. Alternatively, or as well, you could check microsoft.com for C++ redistributable udpates yourself.

It might help to post (in spoiler tags) the contents of your current obse.log file.

The other thing that occurs to me is that your Oblivion.ini might be corrupt or otherwise no good, and it could be worth trying anyway - deleting it, which will allow it to be recreated afresh, that is.

Additionally, try removing/uninstalling a mod at a time, starting with "the most likely", whatever they might be.

Checking for mod compatibility is always key. Readme files help considerably for these purposes.

If you can think of any further info to post (e.g., your load order) then perhaps you should do so. Meanwhile, if I think of anything else, I'll post that. Good luck!

C++ Runtime error crash: http://tescosi.com/wiki/PCS:Sudden_random_crash_with_C%2B%2B_runtime_error

The cause for your crash might not be on that page, but installing those updates won't hurt.

I downloaded both. The 2008 version "repaired" my install. The 2010 version would have been a new install, so I didn't do it and tried the other suggestion instead. The "repair" made no difference. Thanks for trying, anyhow. All is well as ends well, however, because my problem does appear to be corrected. Thanks again.

I hadn't tried eliminating one mod at a time because, up until now, the problem had been sort of hit and miss. About the time I read your post I realized that I had a near perfect opportunity now since almost anything I did seemed to cause the error. Proving that even a blind pig finds some acorns, I got lucky first crack out of the box. The very first mod I deactivated, one which I had been thinking about doing without anyhow, cleared my errors. It's called "pleased to meet you" or something very like that, and it gives names to NPCs. Most of the un-named NPCs I meet as I'm killing them anyhow, so I won't miss it. Wouldn't you know, it is one of the few that didn't come from the top 100 list. What an amazing co-incidence. Thanks for your help.

I'm using Nice to Meet You, and it seems to work fine, but it makes it so that you have to learn NPC names. I hope that's not the mod to which you're referring, ha-ha.

Anyway, congrats on finding your problem.

Happy gaming!
