Save points

Post » Sat Nov 06, 2010 1:28 am

Don't we already have auto saves every time we enter and exit a building?

The OP is talking about first-person shooter-style save points, where the game automatically saves when you reach a certain location. The player is not allowed to make his own saves.

It sounds like someone's been playing Demon's Souls. :P

Anyway, no, I don't want this. I really just want to be able to save and stop playing whenever I want/need to.

Well, actually Demon's Souls does it a bit differently. It saves almost constantly, from what I've read, and it's an RPG. It doesn't allow you to save, but rather treats thing, in a way, as in real life. It doesn't let you relod if you screw something up and, by dying, you can temporarily gimp your character's power and lose basically all of your currency... with no reloads allowed. I've heard it genuinely makes things very challenging, which is why the game seems praised so much, but it sounds like people who've played Demon's Souls really felt this feature added to the game... but I don't want Skyrim to be as challenging as Demon's Souls.

Either the OP is really old or really young. He is old to know what Save Points are and likes them Or is too young to never have experianced it and only thinks it's a cool idea.

I hate Save points. I hate replaying the same 10 minutes or so to get to where I keep dieing. Also in most save points games, the game is linear and you have no choice to
change your ways if something is not working out.

Look at the game Vampire the Masquarde"Redemeption, the first one. It had save points. We all cries that this svcked big time. They put in a save anywhere in the first patch.
No save points is a bad idea. I want to save when I want where I want. It's too much of an incovienence. If Skyrim was like this, I don't think I would buy the game. It's just not
worth playing.

Then again, you can set limits on yourself. You are capeable to do this are you not? You can make the game as hard core as you want. It's called setting the limits yourself.

If you die and then have to start a new game, then do so. There is nothing stopping you from doing so. If you want to only save, say when you enter a city, then do so and not
save anymore. Save points is anything you want it to be. Just do it yourself.

Saving points could be a great idea for ES, it could make the game hard for hardcoe players that enjoys challenges, this encourages players to play tactical and make every decision count, making stealth players to make every stealth attack count or mess up and enter combat or warriors paying attention to their health or gear before they rush into combat, at the start of the game it can ask you do you want to use this feature or add it into hardcoe mode if there is one.

What do you guys think?

Given the consistent CTD rate of pretty much anything Bethesda has released in "vanilla" form plus the emphasis on modding which often adds to the "crash-prone-ness," I think save points belong on the "Top Ten Worst Ideas Possible for a Bethesda Game" list. If not top 5.

Save when I hit the save button, to protect myself from the evil crashes and glitches, thank you very much.

EDIT: I thought this looked familiar: http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1167328-game-saving-mechanics/

I like the idea, but when the boss comes up to my desk I want to be able to save right there and turn off before I get caught. I mean umm, its a good idea, would add to the RP of the game but on the other hand, its just not practical. Sometimes we HAVE to leave and want to save.

Nah, I would prefer to be able to save whenever. Mainly because if I need to get off of the game, I want to be able to leave whenever.

Not just that, but save points seem to be a little old in my opinion. Most games that I've played don't use save points as much anymore, just save wherever. However, i don't think we should be able to save in the middle of a battle.

Agree. The only time I can accept that I'm unable to save is in a battle. Other times? Nope. Saving whenever I want and even naming savegames (at least via the console) is much more satisfying than save points IMO.

Nope - for the reasons which have already been mentioned - if I have to quit the game for whatever reason I want to do it with little fuss, and because of bugs and glitches I like to save really really often.

Workable but you lose the rollback option who is very handy with quest bugs. I always takes a hard save before starting an important quest.
It also create problem if you test mods; hard save, install mod, see if it has any point, if not exit remove mod and load hard save.

Over reaction alert....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.

Seriously I play rpg's for stories and Role playing not challenge, I don't want to die due to a realistic ( sic uber difficult system. )
I want a slow steady learing curve, a difficulty setting that when set to very easy means even the end boss has little chance of defeating me and... plenty of saves.

Plus this is an open world game on a new engine, that was created by a company that tbh leaves full patching to the modders.
So saves will be needed.

If it was an option and they made the game much more difficult on higher settings sure.
Just not for everyone, and all settings.

I think it could just be an optional thing. Flip a switch whenever you want it, y'know?
I probably wouldn't use it though.

FPS style? I absolutely hate FPS' that don't have quicksave, which sadly is many of them nowadays. That causes spontanious "[censored] half-assed console port" style swearing :D

On topic, during the time it took to post this message, the game could have crashed three times. So no.

I love the hell out of Demon's Souls, it's one of my all time favorite games, and that feature definitely does add to the gameplay experience. That said, it is not at all something I want in an Elder Scrolls game. It's completely inappropriate for that type of gameplay.

NOOOOOOOOOO!

I can see myself clearing out an entire dungeon and, and taking thirty minutes to do so, then getting to within a few feet of the save station, and then the game crashes....

Me: TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOODD!

Either they should be at every corner or even better that i think we both could settle to is Some areas that you cant save in like dungeons etc. But in cities and in pubs You gotta be able to save.

I absolutely hate games with "checkpoints" because what if I have to leave in the middle of my game?
"We're leaving to go eat, turn off your game!"
"Uhhh, hold on! I gotta get to a checkpoint!"
..........
"Still waiting"
"Almost there........"

No. For the oft stated reason that I want to be able to leave when I want to leave, not only when I find a checkpoint. It kind of works bad on all sides, sometimes I play longer than intended to reach the checkpoint, sometimes I lose game play because I gots to go so I shut down and end up where I last saved, sometimes I end early because I got to a checkpoint and I know I have to leave in a short time so I don't want to lose game play. End of the day it wastes my time, and I find my time to be more and more valuable to me as I get older. Supply and demand you know, I got the same demand but the supply seems to be running out.
