Save points

Post » Fri Nov 05, 2010 11:53 pm

Saving points could be a great idea for ES, it could make the game hard for hardcoe players that enjoys challenges, this encourages players to play tactical and make every decision count, making stealth players to make every stealth attack count or mess up and enter combat or warriors paying attention to their health or gear before they rush into combat, at the start of the game it can ask you do you want to use this feature or add it into hardcoe mode if there is one.

What do you guys think?

Nah, I would prefer to be able to save whenever. Mainly because if I need to get off of the game, I want to be able to leave whenever.

Not just that, but save points seem to be a little old in my opinion. Most games that I've played don't use save points as much anymore, just save wherever. However, i don't think we should be able to save in the middle of a battle.

I don't think save points could be possible with a game like TES. Nor would i want it to be possible. Just my opinion though.

So in an open world this can only be achieved one way, saving at a particular place.
Well, it may make exploring more challanging, but it reduces the option of the player. And it becomes redundant, just fast travel back to town, save, fast travel back.

Another aspect about saving, when you die in TES you reload, because that reality is "false" because in that reality the hero did not exist and therefore there was no event. Games with save points tend to be more of a, "you died, but some mystical force teleported you back here and revived your body"
Its a whole different mentality, and the latter makes no sense in the world of TES.

I'd like to be able to save whenever I want to. It's part of the freedom for me and it helps with the roleplaying. If I die and have to redo an hour of gameplay, then that svcks. If I get a quick do-over, then it's like the death never happened and I can keep on roleplaying.

It's up to the player to decide how much they want to abuse that system. You decide your own challenges. If you feel like loading an autosave from entering a new cell is cheating, then limit yourself to hard saves at specific points. I don't want a feature taken away from me just because a few other people want more limitations and can't practice self control to enforce their own difficulties.

Bethesda's games crash too much for there to be save points. I assure you that there will be few who think limited saves are a good idea.

I am also pretty sure there is another thread that covers this subject.

It'd be do-able but very gamey and out of place. And there'd have to be quite a few for an open world game. Just not practical. Now if you want the best it's Wasteland's example. The game always saved itself so you could never o back, never redo a decision. Now that's true hardcoe and exactly what should be an option. If not you could always play a whole character start to finish without ever making a save file once or going wih game made auto saves as your ony choice of a load. And yes a whole open world playthrough without saving and the console/PC not shutting down, failing, electricity going out, etc. has been done before.

Any game with the sheer complexity, scope, content and ground-breaking-ness as all TES games are will inevitably suffer from bugs. Ranging from minor ones (crashes, freezes), to handy ones (paint brush) and.. game and quest breaking ones (cowl bug, vampire cure bug).

For this reason a TES game needs the option to save at any point.

There are other reasons, such as restricting saves is a way to put false difficulty into a game. It makes the game more difficult, without making the game more difficult.

A resounding NO!

In an ideal world no games would have "save points"

Save points are for Linear RPGs, not open world.

With Fast Travel, you could save whenever you want too anyway, Save Points is one of the few things you can actually do yourself
though

EDIT: And ES is too open ended anyway

no, its one of the things that is more annoying than anything. what if i can only play for a limited time in the morning? what if i don't make it to teh save spot? i just wasted my time.

I remember in dead rising 2 how annoying it is lookin for bathrooms to save in, btw why would they make saving only available in bathrooms? seems really random

No, i like being able to save when & where i want.
And as mentioned above, save points dont work very good in open world rpg's.

This isn't Final Fantasy or the 1990's. We should be able to save where ever we want and trust me with Beth's past history with Bugs/glitches you'll want to be able to save when ever you can.

For the record, I'm still one of those "never reload after botching a quest" players - your failures and enemies are what add flavor and character to your save, of course. Yet I like being able to save wherever I want: not only for convenience but because it allows me to save moments to play around with, like instigating fights between NPCs. Such freedom in both gameplay and roleplay would be lost to a fair degree if we could only save at certain areas.

Because of my obsessive need to randomly jump off high places, I need a save anywhere feature.

I absolutely detest save points. It is the worst game mechanic ever invented, in my opinion. I refuse to even buy a game that has save points. No. Just no.

ahahahahahaha

Seriously, though, save anywhere just gives you more options. You can choose to reload over and over again or you can choose not to. I can see using them to increase difficulty, but in and open world game which is likely to crash at inopportune moment, why degenerate?

A million times no. Save points are absolutely horrible. And if it's in the game the first 1k mods will be to remove save points.

Don't we already have auto saves every time we enter and exit a building?
