Save Problem

Post » Wed Aug 26, 2009 1:52 am

I see tons of stuff out there about people using Windows 7 and Vista who can't access their files. It's been ages since I played, and I've been modding the game to my heart's content, and installing the expansions. This led to mesh issues, and I've been told that the solution is to move everything to a new folder. I can't figure out where my saved games are located, though. I found them once so that I could back things up, but I don't remember how... I see people talking about starting compatability view, but I'm not seeing the button that's supposed to do this. It's definitely not there. I'm using Windows 7, and I do have see hidden files enabled. Any suggestions?

With Windows 7 it's generally best to install older applications, especially games, in a location other than Program Files (or Program Files (x86) for 32 bit applications in the 64 bit version). That being said, you can probably find your Morrowind saves in C:\Users\Your User Name\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Morrowind\Saves.

I'm not 100% certain that you will find them there, as my Morrowind installation on my Windows 7 computer is in a Games folder on a separte hard drive from the Windows system folders. I'd put a good sum amount of Septim's on the location I gave above being the correct one in your case though.

That installation path of the game saves is only for Oblivion and not for Morrowind unless you actually install Morrowind in the "C:\\". It's not matter on what OS you install Morrowind the path for your saves is always the same ("\Morrowind\Saves"). :user:

If the OP want to find your saves just copy the entire Morrowind folder (if you have the Saves folder as a subfolder) to a new destination outside of any C:\Program Files related folders on both Vista and Windows7 regardless of 32/64 bit system. :)

Windows 7 uses the 'VirtualStore' folder located in your '...\Users\Username\AppData\Local' folder for applications that violate the principle of not storing user data in Windows system folders. Many older applications, when installed in the default location will have their user data diverted to the 'VirtualStore' folder to maintain this principle. Perhaps Morrowind is an exception to this rule, but like I said, I was just taking a guess to try and help out.

Oblivion, regardless of where it is installed, will place it's save games in C:\Users\YourUserName\My Documents\My Games\Oblivion\Saves (that path is for Windows 7, it is slightly different for Vista). Oblivion was coded for the new file system principle of the Windows NT based OS's where each user keeps their personal data in their own personal folders and has no need to use the 'VirtualStore' folder.

Actually, that worked! Thanks, maybe now I can finally play again. And I'm going to be very careful to keep it backed up better from now on. I was worried I was going to lose them.
