[ WIPz ] Save Skill Books

Post » Fri Aug 06, 2010 5:22 am

Has anyone made a mod that would allow the player to chose whether or not to gain skill increases by books? I didn't see anything on PES. So I thought I would give it a try.

The problem I am anticipating is compatibility. I would have unique scripts attached to each skill book. As such, any mod altering books, such as Book Jackets and Book Rotate, would not be compatible. Is there a way to ensure compatibility with other mods? Thanks for any suggestions.

Excellent idea! I remember a TESIV mod that allows you to save skill books for later, but I don't recall a Morrowind mod doing that (I could be wrong).

Not sure how to help with compatibility, though. :(

You would need to make a patch for every mod you wanted this to be compatible with: book rotate, book jackets, book rotate with jackets, etc. When I did my passing time while reading mod, which also added scripts to every single book, I had to make four different versions of it (the main mod and three "patches" that were modifications of the main mod). Keep that in mind should you decide to go forward with this.

Thanks for the heads up. I think I will go ahead with this mod. I have had success with a proof of concept script on a single book. Now it just comes down to some copying & pasting. Based on the early results, I should be able to make this compatible with other mods by adding my script to the end.

BR has a part in the script where custom scripts go, so make sure you use that instead of adding your script to the end of them.

Thanks for your help. I am finished with the majority of the mod. I will be preparing for release soon.

It's great that you're making this mod, but just so you know, it's already possible to save skills books in morrowind, unlike in oblivion. This is because you can pick up books while in menu mode, which allows you to add them (or any other item), to your inventory without activating it. For compatibility's sake, people might prefer to use this method.

Yeah, I was aware of that method, but it was a nuisance. Also, with the mod you can read the books whenever you want and the player will know which skill will be increased beforehand. I think it will work better in terms of planning level progression and for roleplaying purposes.

Really? I can imagine using this mod in that case, as knowing precisely what skill is increased in advance saves me the reload. And you're right so far as it being more immersion-friendly.
