Save some time with saves!

Post » Wed Sep 01, 2010 11:05 pm

OK so i played oblivion and fallout 3 into the ground. really enjoyed those games :] so we all know this game is huge, and theres no way someone can see all the story threads playout in one character's playthrough... that's great for replay value... but it produces a rather annoying problem i run into after a few replays. all the saves begin to jumble together and it becomes a pain to hunt for a specific character, but even worse is the fact that i have a chance of overwriting a previous playthrough's save...

the solution? simple...

lets have each new character created get their own seperate save location! so lets say i log into the game... my current character is already loaded and ready to continue his journey... but today i want to play my crazy, serial-killing, sociopath. all i do is click on something like "load different character" and once i do that all of their saves pop up and i can continue that guys journey.

i can think of a couple titles off the top of my head that had exactly what i'm talking about... dragon age, and the mass effect titles

i'm still an undergraduate computer science major, but i dont think that would take that much time to implement in a patch or mod maybe?

so who here is down for a more organized, less stressful life?? :foodndrink:

They could also just say... let you name your saves, that could avoid a lot of confusion with saves. But hey, we can't have that! After all, it wouldn't be convenient for console users! And it's not like the designers can make some modifications to the PC version to make it work better on that platform or anything... No! All versions need to be utterly identicle! Down to every single detail of the interface!

It would be nice but the fact is the game is already printed and shipped so it's not like they can add it anymore. You can probably use a save manager for pc to avoid overwriting your saves although i find if you just go slow when you save and double check you don't have a problem.

try giving your characters different names, and using that pink squishy thing in your head (forget the name) to remember who's who?
or at least write it down

I like the way Dragon Age: Origins did it. You get a list of all you're characters and then you choose which one you want and then pick the save file. It's impossible to overwrite other characters.

That is exactly what i was going to say, it definitely helped me figure out what i was looking for. Fallout save menu does become a mess after a while. Oh well.

something like this (I wouldn't try it on Vegas though, see if it gets updated first)

Right - it can't work with FONV - because, as description says it is searching registry to find fallout3.exe - and You can't change that because it is compiled to an exe ....

my F3 saves didn't get jumbled, they were automatically sorted by the character's names .

CASM has a separate profile feature. Also you can name your saves, but only through the console. Save savename

I like the way that Fallout 3 did the saves. It wasn't organized like other games but it was a million times better then the way that Oblivion uses Saves.

In Fallout 3 you could simply open the console and type
save
and it would create a save file with whatever savename you put in the parameters. I imagine the same will be avaliable in NV. Clears up any confusion you get with the auto named saves.
