Save Suddenly Corrupt?

Post » Tue Oct 26, 2010 7:42 pm

MY game has suddenly become corrupt on me. Now the odd thing is that it worked fine this morning, but now it crashes when I try to save. On this save I've been particularly cautious, now using autosaves or quicksaves at all. But I'm wondering if there's any utilities out there to circumvent these problems.

While it doesn't exactly prevent the problem from arising, http://www.fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3729 will ensure that you always have multiple recent saves to fall back on.

A couple of fixes that you could try:
  • Load your save, then kill the player. After loading your save again, try to make a new save.
  • Load an older save from the main menu, then load your latest save from in-game. Fallout 3 doesn't load all relevant data when saves are loaded from in-game, so although this may cause some bugs, it might also prevent the corrupt data from loading.

I use ASU and it's worked great so far. That second trick did it, only just found out now that do that saved my game last time this happened. I'll try to killing player trick next time though if it might be less buggy.

You should try CASM, it's much easier to configure than ASU and also has a few more options to choose from. You don't have to go into the console and have to remember the name of some obscure script, the configuration menu is right in your Pipboy.

I have looked over CASM before, I might give it a shot on my next character but I honestly am too lazy to do whatever is required to swap between the two.

EDIT: Could this possibly be from save bloating? If so is there a utility to remove bloat for Fallout?

Uh oh.. I'm beginning to notice that I must do one of those tricks in order to save EVERY time I play. Anyone know how to remedy this? :(

Gary Bash was goign to implement that function, not sure if it has yet though. THe topic shouldn't be more than a few pages back. Might even be on the top page.

Here's a question. Would a mod that makes gratutious amounts of bullet shells remain ofter combat cause bloating? If so that may very well be the cause.

Are you doing anything specific when the corrupting occurs? Such as, one of my saves always gets corrupted if I enter Central Metro or complete Agatha's Song quest.

Nope, not that I can find I just have to do that player.kill trick everytime I start the game and sometimes loading a later save then the newest save.

I've got pretty much the same problem at the moment. Though at first it was crash on any type of save (quicksave, console save, menu save) now it's freeze on level up. I started a new character using the exact same load order and mods and everything is just fine

I installed GaryBash in the hopes the remove bloat was available. Unfortunately not yet :(
I might try what Cipscis suggested. I didn't think of that. I'd really hate to have to start over.

I'm considering starting over at this point anyway, I'll likely switch to CASM as well and update all my overhauls etc.
