Savegame Browser?

Post » Wed Jul 27, 2011 7:49 pm

Has a graphical browser ever been made for Oblivion save games? They're less understood (and harder to parse) than esp/esm files, so perhaps nobody has ever made one. Then again, perhaps someone has and it's just never caught my attention before.

I'm about to do some tinkering with the save/load code. A way to browse to a particular section/record in a savegame - even if the record itself is undecoded - would make the job much faster.

No such thing exists as far as I'm aware. It would be nice to have, and so would an editor. The closest thing to it is probably whatever Bash code supports the "remove bloat" feature.

I recall seeing some code in OBSE's source that parsed ESS files for something -- You could try looking for that.

All I can find in the OBSE code is some extremely minimal stuff for extracting mod lists. I know that WryeBash has a pretty decent savegame parser to support it's "Statistics" feature, but I don't think it's available in a browser form.

I'll keep bumping this for a few days, just to leave no rock unturned.

It's a shame that Wrye's no longer around; I know for a fact that there is a lot more code in Bash than actually appears. It seems likely that it could be leveraged to do a lot of the heavy lifting for something like this.

If I wasn't so busy with fixing up Wrye Bash, I'd be interested in doing just such a thing. There's lots of ess file stuff in Wrye Bash. Look in bosh.py, the 'SaveFile' class (it's around line 5824 right now). There's some good stuff in there, probably just needs someone to whip up a good UI for it.
