Saves keep coming back when I delete them...

Post » Fri May 04, 2012 3:19 am

I'm using the Steam version and the game has a good bit of mods. About 90% of these saves don't work at all anymore. I try Wyre Mash, just deleting them from the saves folder, deleting them from the recycle bin, and may as well be standing on my head to see if the blood flows better. I don't know if this is Steam Cloud related, but have a feeling it is. Anyone know how to get rid of stubborn saves? I'm using Windows 7 if that has anything to do with this.

Guess it'd be helpful if I said what mods and utilities I am using. I'm using the following utilities:

Morrowind Enchanted Editor(only use it to get rid of stubborn ref crap)
Wyre Mash
Morrowind Script Extender
I have Morrowind Enhanced on my hard drive, but never use it.
TEStool(have no idea how to use it and my not knowing when I ended up merging stuff might be my wrong doing...)
FPS Optimizer
Morrowind Code Patch

Mods I use right now include:
Better Bodies
Blight Bounties
Clean Seyda Neen Starter Shack(I think that's the name. It's one of those house adding mods that just gives a shack in Seyda Neen that has no uber power stuff)
Gift Exchange 1.2
Skill Progress(it's a mod that adds a scrolls that allows you to track your skill progress easier)
Cliff Racer Killer(the Cliff Racers are still in the game with this mod. They just die upon appearence)
Fligg's Slave Mod
Immersive Chargen(also known as Meaner Chargen)
Imperial Employment Office(I thought it'd be cool until I found it wasn't that interesting of a so called, "job giving" guild)
Slave Bracers Revamped(this one was never finished by the maker, and it has been causing most of my problems from what I can tell since I tried it out)
Improved Bartering
Go To Jail 3.7(makes going to jail like Oblivion's going to jail only adds in a mine area for when you have a bounty of 1000)
Bathhouse(adds a bathhouse to the Foreign Quarter of Vivic)
More NPCs

I think this might be a windows thing and possibly because your savegames are associated with more than than 1 user profile such as the user and also the administrator, so if you delete those savegames whilst logged in as a user then they will be removed from your user profile only but will still be present on the administrator profile so you will need to log on as administrator as well to delete from that profile.

I am relatively new to windows 7 so am not an expert but have had similar problems with savegames because i was able to play morrowind and make a savegame whilst logged in as a user, but when i installed Tribunal and Bloodmoon afterwards i was getting the snowflake bug, a solution for which is to run as administrator but found i could not use or the save i had made as a user. For all its failings i doubt that Steam is the culprit in this particular case.

Anyway , i doubt there is anything wrong with your savegames and most likely they just need cleaning in Wryemash. Probable cause of your woes based on the cryptic clues provided is that you need to update the masters list on your save games. To do this loadup your savegame in wryemash and in the bottom right hand corner you will see a list of mods that the savegame is dependant on , uncheck any mods that you are no longer using , update the masters list and save .

Alternatively it could be that 1 or more mods are dependant on MWE or its successor MWSE so installing MWSE should resolve it.

If MWE/MWSE are required but missing , or dependant mods are missing from your game setup then Morrowind will crash to desktop without warning or explanation whilst trying to load either a new game or a savegame so make sure you have the required utilites/mods installed and activated .

Sorry about being cryptic. I'm new to computer issues, as I am used to games working just fine on consoles or old console games getting all weird and me just having to turn the system off. I guess I'm a bit spoiled thanks to the PS2. I have tried cleaning these saves, actually, and I think the problem was that I was screwing around with TEStool and ended with with merged level lists, dialogue lists, and I forgot the last one. It might have messed things up.

Luckily, quicksaves are somehow able to work... I would just record the problem with Camstudio, but I don't know if I could...

Testool is potentially game busting if you use the 'Just Fix it' option, usually resulting in being unable to load save games or even start a new game. I don't think the exact cause has been identified but uninstalling everything then doing a fresh install should get things back to normal. The merged dialogues is known to be problematic and could well be the problem. Use wrye mash for making merged lists

Some players have reported the quick save feature to be buggy so use with caution.

What i recommend you do is make regular saves but resume play by loading the save game you just made then you will know immediately if the save you just made is a good one. If not you know to revert back to your last known good save.I do this all the time and found this to be a reliable way of making saves.

Thanks. I will have to get rid of all the mods and stuff, and simply be less mod happy. I actually do the whole reload the save that was just made thing, and it does work, just not always reliable. When I get the psychical disk in a few weeks(my dad ordered it for me.) I will get rid of the Steam version, and see how that goes.

Return to III - Morrowind
