Saving as a Character

Post » Mon May 23, 2011 7:05 am

Wouldn't the saving system be better if you could create characters and then have seperate sections where you save specifically to that character, instead of a long list that has each save? Also I think you should be able to fast travel to your house :D, sorry if I posted this in the wrong spot it's my first time posting...

Long list? I have around 5 saves for my current character in NV and FO (My oblivion saves disappeared when my xbox died.) and the rest of the saved ones have 1 save each.
It's not too complicated to scroll through really.
Use less saves, easy as that.
But I wouldn't mind a new system as long as we can have a lot of saves for each character "if" we want to.

Uhmmm... It's a Bethesda game, the general rule of thumb is 'never delete your saves.'
EDIT: The second rule of thumb is 'never overwrite your saves.'

Categorizing multiple saves based on character? Yes. Fast travel directly to your house? Not a proponent of FT in general, so I'd personally say no.

Strange then, I've gone fine with overwriting my saves and using a maximum of 10 saves on each current character. ;)

Tis' odd. I usually only have 2 or 3 saves for my characters. Guess I haven't been following that rule very well.
Do you mean like a hub, for each character? That would be...interesting...but I'm fine with the current way.

I have to agree. It's something Elder Scrolls seriously needs. When you go to load a game, you select one of your characters and then the saves for that character appear and you select one of them. I got tried of scrolling through 100+saves just to find my old assassins character because I wanted so mindless killing fun. It's a simple but effective thing to add.

I normally only play one character per each run and delete old playthroughs, but its something small which would be of use to a lot of people so I don't see why not.

2 saves for each character is how I do it. I have no idea why in the world anyone in their right mind would keep individual saves....

If I did that, I would have almost 2000 between 3 characters.

Overwriting is not bad, you just have to be extremely careful with it.

"Save twice, overwrite once" That's my motto.

Fast travel to a house would be fine, imo.

Also, what if you're rp'ing a character who doesn't have a home?

The system used by DA:O works well for my characters. I am not overly concerned, as I tend to save often and then overwrite, only when I am positive it is safe to do so.

The DA:O system helps categorize, though.

With respect to FT to one's home, I would not usually do this, but, I most definately would not suggest to others that they should not be able to do so.

This is something that I hope is in Skyrim. It's something that Bioware did with both Mass Effect and Dragon Age. I think it would be a good move as I have to be careful saving in Fallout 3 or New Vegas or I'll accidently overwrite the file.

I think the OP is asking for something similar to Mass Effect, where the saves are organized under a specific character in the save menu.

Joe
Autosave
Quicksave
Save 1
Save 2

Jessica
Autosave
Quicksave
Save 1
Save 2

I do support such a feature.

Have a http://images.uesp.net//c/c4/Fishystick.jpg Welcome to the forums!

I would like this. It helps when one shares a computer that may have multiple accounts belonging to a multiple amount of users.

I must have at least accidentally overwritten my brothers' characters (who unfortunately did not have a backup or a very recent one) at least five times for Morrowind and Oblivion. I have also lost a few myself.

Even though, I only share my gaming rig with only one of my brothers now. I still have to be really careful.
I now save at the beginning of each session so that my save file is at top and I make multiple save files for each character. Its still a burden, however, and it would be a lot easier for me if Skyrim were to have this feature.

This. Due to playing each character with a very different set of mods, I only play one at a time.

But it would be nice if they joined the modern RPG industry and saved each character/profile/whatever into it's own folder. (Recent BioWare games have done this, for instance. You can switch which character is the "active" one at the main menu screen. And then you only see that character's saves....)

(I run around 10-15 saves in OB / FO3, overwriting the oldest as I go.)

Yeah, this is a handy thing to have. Wrye Bash can do it on the PC, and someone'll probably make something similar for Skyrim, but it'd be nice for the console players and non-mod users to have it too.

 Then consider yourself lucky you're not corrupting saves en masse. Not that it's a frequent problem, but still. There's plenty of horror stories abound, here and elsewhere. And further, why delete/overwrite and take the risk when the average save-size to disk space ratio is pretty high?

The benefit of this is also that Autosaves and Quicksaves from one character do not overwrite those from another character. I think everyone has been in that situation where they forgot to save, went on to another character and the Autosave has overwitten the most recent progress from the game they were just playing, which can be quite a hassle when they have to go back and do everything over again.

I like this idea of seperate save thingies.

Fast travel to house would be redundant if one of my major hopes comes true, the return of teleportation spells.
Id rather have mark and recall.

I like the idea. :)

Ooohh, dang. Then for the 7 years I've been playing TES, I have NOT been following the "rules" on saves.
... I usually only have 1 save per character. :whistling: on a very very rare instance, will I ever have 2 saves on a character.

OP, welcome to the forums! :goodjob:

Well, I think the OP means something like this:
You start the game, go to the "Load Game" menu, or whatever it's called this time around, and you are presented with a list of character names (your characters) and once you click on one, another sub menu opens up where you can select from that characters saves you've made under that name.

Seems pretty logical to me, and I'd like that, although it's not something I'd plead for. It's just essentially categorizing better, which is always good.

That was exactly what I meant, thanks for saying it more coherently than me :D, I just know I usually end up making two or three characters every time I play, not to mention when I leave the game alone then come back....

I have like 5 saves per character. I would like it though if it was like

Start Menu---->pick specific character--->load file

I don't see why they can't do that.

Xbox version, ain't got any tons of gig's free for saves, saves reach up to 10 MB per save after a while so 10 saves = 100 MB and 100 saves = 1 gig.
My xbox can't currently afford that.
I'll buy the new one soon that has the 250 gig so I think I can be a little more careless with memory space then but with my current one it's not possible.
