Saw something odd in the Sky this morning, Help me identify?

Post » Sat May 24, 2014 6:50 pm

So, this morning I was outside putting my youngest daughter on the School bus(oldest was at Outdoor school for the week), when she looked up into the sky and said "What's that daddy?" I looked up in the sky, and there was some kind of aircraft way high up in the sky. Thing is, it was much bigger then what an airplane would generally look, but yet, it didn't look like an airplane that had just taken off either. It had two really bright lights at either end of the bottom of it, and it was just, well...crawled across the sky. It was extremely slow moving, from the time my daughter first pointed it out till the time I walked back to my trailer was a solid 2 1/2 - 3 minutes(it was 2 minutes just till the bus got there, and then I have a fairly long driveway). There was absolutely no sound, so it definitely wasn't a helicopter(that happens frequently, at least once a month, I'm assuming they are medivac helicopters), and again, it was very slow moving. Oh, it also left no contrail.

Sooo..any ideas? I can 100% safely eliminate a helicopter, it was A: far to high up, B: perfectly quiet, neither of which jive with any helicopter I've ever had fly over my place. If it was a plane or a jet, it was really slow moving for one, I've watched plenty of planes move across the sky in my life-time, they are usually out of sight within a solid minute, maybe minute in a half, and they leave contrails, at least usually). I also don't believe it was a plane because generally they look a lot smaller, this thing was fairly sizable. And again, it had very bright lights on it's underside.

Now, I'm not a conspiracy theorist, and I firmly believe there is a logical explanation for this. I'm 99.99% solid that it wasn't a UFO(because what UFO would move THAT slowly).

My best guess is some kind of military air transport? About 5 minutes after I watched it go on it's merry way, I heard a helicopter go overhead heading in the same direction. Just curious though as to what exactly it could be.

Very likely a transporting one. But are you sure it couldn't have been a passenger plane? I've seen a lot of those, flying somewhat low so they looked big and they left no contrails. But I did clearly hear them though... not sure why wouldn't transporting plane leave a sound either, on the other hand, not like you're going to sneak around with something that big.

I don't assume anyone could easily mistake a blimp for an airplane...

I have never in my life seen a Zeppelin or a Blimp go by my house(I live on top of a mountain in the middle of nowhere). Also, it was really high up in the sky. I have decent ability to judge distance based on several towers near my house and comparing it to them. It was definitely at airplane altitude.

Also, I feel it fair to mention that no plane should be flying low near my place, the nearest major airport is in Hagerstown, a solid 35 miles away, and it only does several flights a day, and to my knowledge, none of them this way, they all go up towards Baltimore and D.C.

Edit again: My wife also says to mention that the planes that fly out of hagerstown are small passenger planes. No major flights go out of there, so the planes are all small, and what I saw was clearly big.

Still leaning towards some kind of Military transport, especially with the Helicopter that followed it's path 5 minutes later. Just don't know of any military transports that are that large.

He said it was an aircraft and didn't really specify what it looked like enough to make an assumption one way or another.

Blimps and Zeppelins can go pretty high.

Care to provide a description of shape?

Here is a list of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_experimental_aircraft. If that might help.

That is...definitely around the size of it, for sure. Can't get a good look at it's under-carriage though. Does it have any lights attached underneath?

And no, Not aliens. Like I said in the OP, I am NOT a conspiracy theorist, and neither do I believe that I will be that one person on earth who happened to glimpse an Alien in their UFO flying around checking us out. LOL

It was big, quite large I can tell you that, it left no contrails, it had lights on the undercarriage. I want to say two, but it might have just been one(I'm human, and it was literally right before I was ready to go to bed). Exact shape did initially make me think blimp, it seemed almost cylindrical in shape, but again, I have never in my entire life seen a blimp(outside of television), and certainly not one near my house. But if it was a blimp, it was a really large one, again, going by how high it was in the air, and how large it appeared, it would have to be a blimp of mammoth proportions. I mean, planes are big, very big, and yet they look like toys in the sky. This thing was BIG.

That's true, I assumed prematurely thinking that one would obviously recognize a blimp.. but if it was high enough and among enough clouds, who knows, it could have been a blimp as well.

Did the lights blink? Majority of planes have lights, for other planes to spot them easier I suppose.

No clouds, it was a clear sky out this morning. The light did not blink, it was just this permanent glare at me.

Also, again, I live in the middle of nowhere. There is absolutely zero reason for a blimp to be flying overhead. I am 8 miles away from the nearest town, which is total population 1100 or so. 30 miles in either direction from a major place, and neither of them are "major", more mediumish, at population of 90-110k(Hagerstown, no idea total pop of Cumberland)

Right now, I'm leaning towards this myself. The B-52 is definitely large enough for the object I saw. The only other logical explanation I think would be a blimp, but again, well, there are just so many reasons against it being a blimp that I don't believe it was one.

is there a Military base around you anywhere?

like a few previous Posters i first thought a B-52, but then i thought "what would a bomber be doing in an area like that.."

wait.. are B-52s even still in service?

There is a minor military camp(not base, camp) right down below me, but no planes, no landing strip. Called "The Baker training camp" I've driven by it several times, even if there was a landing/take off runway, it would be incredibly loud, that camp is literally less then 5 minutes away, and I've never heard any planes taking off/landing before. So that can 100% safely be eliminated.

Yes, they are.

My guess, considering the information provided, was that it was likely a military aircraft since Andrews AFB is nearby.

Swept wings or straight wings?

How many engines did it have? And were they on the wings or in the very rear of the plane?

Off the top of my head, some of the larger aircraft fielded by the military include the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-52_Stratofortress, the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rockwell_B-1_Lancer, the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B-2_Spirit, the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boeing_C-17_Globemaster_III, the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-5_Galaxy, and the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C-130_Hercules. It could also perhaps be a refueling tanker like the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KC-10_Extender or the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KC-135_Stratotanker.

Any of those fit the bill?

Yep. And they'll continue to be in service for 30 more years.

That does seem the likeliest solution, some kind of military aircraft. I imagine they fly from Baltimore to wherever out past me all the time.

I want to say swept wings, because I don't remember seeing any wings sticking straight out. Unfortunately I have no idea what the placement of the engines were, It was big, but it was high up enough that I couldn't make out individual details like that. A couple of those, along with the B-52 do fit the bill size wise. Definitely not that stealth bomber though, that thing looks like it could break the sound barrier without even trying and this thing was just crawling across the sky. Give or take a minute, I'd say it took a full 4 minutes to go from end of the sky to the other.

Sounds like a Unidentified Flying Object to me, whether it's "them" is a matter for another debate.
