Say NO to Arenas

Post » Sun Mar 23, 2014 2:46 am

I don't want to see this game ruined by the esport crowd. Arenas have no place in MMOs. The time the devolpers would need to spend setting up an arena combat system would be better utililized elsewhere. Be it developing new PvE content or events. Anything is better than arenas.

Arenas ruin games. The arena crowd will demand classes be balanced around 1v1 or 2v2 instead of the massive PvP battles I am looking forward to. They will also demand gear rewards for their little duels. Don't give in to them. Keep this game pure. If people want to 1v1 give them a dueling option.

Agree. Besides if the reason for not having dueling is that it'll take people away from Cyrodiil (according to statement from that Reddit AMA), then i don't see how they could justify adding arenas and e-sport that would take even more people away from Cyrodiil.

I wouldn't mind seeing some barebones arena/dueling support. No reason not to have that there. The line should be drawn where it becomes competitive and yields rewards. That's what motivates a push towards centering PvP around it and rebalancing classes to suit the needs of small scale combat. I don't want that to happen.

Even if we don't get it, I wouldn't be surprised to see the player community forming a dueling culture in Cyrodiil with rules of engagement and everything.

I would suggest a tournament type thing like boethia's calling held once a week. only thing they would be competing for is to move up the ladder and maybe get a special title. No special loot no pvp equipment just bragging rights.

Let me add 1 fight per week win or lose scoring.

I hate threads like this. It's stinks of 'I don't want it so no one can have it'. It's selfish.

Let me point out that I myself don't want to play in arena's but as long as it does not take away from the game why would I care? I would however like to see a world event each week based around an arena to appease both side of the coin.

I'm sorry you don't like my post. My opinions are based on decades of online gaming experience. I honestly feel that arenas will be detrimental to this game.

In the traditional sense of the word, I completely agree; though we don't have to keep doing a copy and paste of the same old arena system we see in others games. Instead of writing up what I suggested in another topic, I'll simply quote myself. Forget what you know about past arenas for a moment, and take these ideas at face value. If you still disagree, that's fine;

While I'm not a huge fan of arenas, having an area where players are allowed to test themselves and each other in combat in a controlled environment is a very realistic and plausible thing. To say it makes it less "pure" is ridiculous. Also, Joined: Today, 08:23 AM, 2 posts.

Wow, why are so many of you so mad that other players want to enjoy something you don't like? You sound like the same people that hate others without even knowing who they are just "because."

I would like to see arenas of some sort make their way in as an alternative to open PvP, but it would have to be done in a lore friendly way and be more socially oriented and less rating oriented.

Arena fighting was a part of Oblivion so I wouldn't be adverse to having Arenas if they were implemented in a different way from other games. I love the idea of scheduled events, make them into something akin to gladiatorial combat with some sort of spectate feature. I think ESO has a lot of potential as long as they don't fall into the traps of implementing things the way other game do.

A complete No. Not interested and don't want a second of dev time devoted to what will be the thin end of the wedge. Pretty soon people who aren't the Arena Gods they imagine themselves to be will be screaming for nerfs of that and boosts of this. And to be frank - they way some of the more 'enthusiastic' proponents of Arena and Open world PvP conduct themselves sometimes - well i'm not sure they're going to b conducive to a good atmosphere.

Blizzard itself admitted arenas were it's biggest mistake (see link in post #4). There are much better reasons against arenas than 'just because'.

I disagree, I love arenas and that is the only type of PvP I personally enjoy. If not for arenas I would have quit WoW over and over again much sooner. To me, and a whole bunch of other guys who are 'esports' enthusiasts apparently, battlegrounds were merely a formality used to farm offsets like boots, belts etc.

I've had enough of battlegrounds before they even released burning crusade but till this day I find arenas in WoW fun despite the balance. I can guarantee my interest in this game will probably fade quicker if they do not consider adding some type of arena in this game.

Come on, Oblivion had a colliseum type arena which, funnily enough, seemed like the only thing that resembled the Roman culture. Big fail on Bethesda's part there lol

Let me elaborate on why I prefer arenas over battlegrounds in WoW. The monotonous nature of battlegrounds aside, in arenas I was more reliant on myself rather than 9 other people half, or even more, of whom are friggin' bots or people in greens. Battlegrounds are hugely unbalanced and I do not personally have the patience for purely PvP guilds that do rated battlegrounds. I prefer to do arena with a select few friends I trust and who dont' rage over voip and on whom I can rely on and work in a team. It is much easier to orchestrate teamwork, it allows me to have a bigger impact on the game as a whole and it just feels glorious to win an arena as the last man standing.

Arenas seem pretty pointless in my opinion. This game has more of a casual feel to it than a serious esport one. I wouldn't want that image tainted by lots of competitive PvP.

Khajiit feels the same way! PVP is not design for 1v1 battles, it will end up into a nerf war. :verymad:

LOL at another thread where the casual game crowd demand the withdrawl of an optional, voluntary feature that isn't even in the design yet.

The reasons why blizzard thought arenas were a mistake apply to this game as well. Read the article.

Don't look at it as an esport or competitive PvP then. A lot of these terms are associated with fail. I also hate those features in games, and actively avoid them; on the other hand I do love arenas in Oblivion, and in films like Gladiator.

It's not arenas that are the problem, it's the way they've been implemented in the past.

We'll just have to see how your massive PvP battles will play out. I'm very skeptical of them simply because I have a feeling they might just get flooded with bots.

Arenas all the wayy.

Casual arenas aka not ranked are something needed... when people want some PvP and you ask them to run 20 minutes in Cyrrodil only to get killed/ganked and run again for 1 minute of action they will go PvP in another game... and you slowly lose them.

What you are talking about is RANKED Arenas and there i maybe agree but you should keep in mind THIS IS NOT [censored] WOW, the classes here have some unique skills but all have access to the Weapon/Guild/etc. skill lines, so the only balance they must ever do is with class skills.

Either way to appeal to the public they must offer as much as they can, i am aware there is a vocal community that wants only Open World PvP and fear arenas might take people from that, but what they are essentially saying by that is that some people would prefer Arenas to AvAvA... so why not give them the option?

You need people to find that everything they want to do is available in your game or they will log out and try other games... however if all they need is available there is a less chance of that. If you want this game to survive(keep in mind the fate of the other subscription MMO`s) you will never stand in the way of them adding an optional feature already present in most of the other MMO`s.
