Scale of the Game

Post » Tue May 10, 2011 6:21 am

Yeah. I'm that way too. No matter how much I end up travelling by foot, I'll always pick up the laziest solution. My fault, but I would prefer a game that would twist my arm in that regard. At least some system like silt striders.

Something like silt striders again would be perfect. At least we had to pay to use the silt strider albeit not much but it was still something.

Either way is good with me. If Skyrim is larger there will be more to explore; if it is smaller, it will have more detail (i assume).

The actual lore map size of Skyrim as compared to Cyrodiil's really has no correlation for how big Skyrim's game space will be. Personally I would love to see a bigger game world (with maintained quality through out).

For all purposes they could make Skyrim's in-game landmass twice the size of Oblivion's and just say it is more to scale. For example in Oblivion even with the 30x timerate, you could walk across the province in a couple of days. From a lore standpoint I don't think that is accurate.

Daggerfalls map wasn't really big at all was it? Just look how big that game was and i'm pretty sure i've only seen half of that game and i've played it for who knows how long.

While I don't want to turn this thread into a fast travel argument, I'll stoke the fire a bit. My problem with FT in OB was that the quests assumed you would use it. A quest that sent you from Anvil to Cheydinhall didn't have any kind of epic voyage feel to it. "Go to so and so on the other side of the freaking province and give him this orange." The quest writer assumed you would fast travel there, taking all of two minutes. If you chose to ignore the 'entirely optional' fast travel, it would take you several (real hours) to get there, assuming you hit a few mines/dungeons along the way. I hope that Skyrim loses the fast travel and changes the gameplay to reflect that.

I'm hoping SKyrim will be vast with hidden villages and buildings deep in forrests and high up in the mountains

I suspect for technical reasons it will be about the same size as OB and MW, above ground at least. I hope I can't stand in the middle of the map and see the edges of the world... I do not like infinite view distance

I hope it's about as big as Oblivion if not bigger. I want to spend months in this game, not weeks. But an ES game hasn't let me down in that retrospect yet. As for fast travel, it needs to be more like Morrowind, where you can actually roleplay. Oblivion's fast travel broke immersion and I had to make up excuses to use it cause I couldn't be arsed walking everywhere, in Morrowind I didn't have to make up excuses!

The fast travel made Oblivion feel small enough then to add on being able to see to other side of the map just made it feel that much smaller.

They can also make the game seem bigger by including geographical barriers to make you wander around and around. Morrowind was good at this, and Nehrim is fantastic with it. A wasted effort if fast travel is included. What made morrowind so good was that eventually you could levitate over the mountains, but it still took a while to get anywhere.

I'm hoping it will be huge. I hope it will dwarf Cyrodil and be a lot more detailed as well. A lot to hope for though :obliviongate:

By looking at that map I'll say that it will be the same size as Oblivion.

I want mountains. Big, huge, vast mountains to climb and explore and fall off and die.

And the mist. I didn't like the mist so much, but I loved the times something appeared from the mist as you approached. Ooooo.

I'm really hoping that it will at least feel bigger than Oblivion. Morrowind always felt that way to me even though it isn't. It's all about the way they present the world.

Personally, I think that Bethesda should keep to the lore and have it slightly smaller than Cyrodiil. Under normal circumstances this would be incredibly disappointing, but I think that if they scrap the fast travel system then they can make the world feel much bigger. Instead of the current 'click here to teleport' stuff they should add in fast travel stations (similar to Morrowind) but there should be no teleporting when you use them. Instead, time should be sped up as you are put on a horse and the horse does the journey for you. A trip from one side of Skyrim to the other should take about five minutes with this fast travel system and it would allow people to take in the full beauty of the world.

Don't worry about the scale, Todd once said that TESV will be bigger than any other game they developed, both content-wise and stuff showing on screen.

the fog of war sort of thing in morrowind made it feel gigantic. If you remove it with MGE, you'll see that there are locations just a hop away that you would never imagine could be so close. That and the mountainous barriers hid the actual distance between areas since you had do walk around, making traveling from one place to another longer than it would be otherwise.

Im not worrying about it. Im sure it will feel about the same size as Oblivion or maybe bigger, and probably have even more detail.

First, it will probably be equal to Oblivion.

Second, I don't get the fast travel thing. There are plenty of mods that prevent its use and you could just not even use it in the first place. If you can't restrain yourself from clicking yes on the fast travel prompt, then you probably shouldn't complain about it. Though alternate forms of transport would be nice. I would prefer those that let you see where you are going, even it is on a ship or something.

It will be about size the of oblivion but it should be much more unique and all places have been hand-crafted. Check gameinformer.

It's not important how big it is,it's important how interesting it is.
Even if it was 100 x Oblivion with same kind of landscape,it'd mean nothing to me.
