Scale of the Game

Post » Sat May 21, 2011 5:30 pm

Hi guys,

I know that there's no official word in yet, but how big do you think the map will be? Cyrodiil was roughly 16 square km. But if you look at the http://img297.imageshack.us/img297/8840/tamrielmap.jpg you'll see that Skyrim is about half the size of Cyrodiil. Do we expect a smaller map than last time? Or will they increase the scale of everything? Will we perhaps be able to visit different provinces this time?

I'd rather want a more detailed map then the (lore-wise) very jammed together one of Cyrodiil. With lots of ravines to navigate, rivers to follow, vampire lakes to discover and dragon dens to extinguish.

Actually, Skyrim should be bigger now, no? Didn't they conquer parts of High Rock and Hammerfell around OB era and some of western Morrowind in Infernal City era?

Don't shoot me, I like vast open spaces. The amount of time I've wasted merely walking in the Grazelands...

I fancy the idea of being able to travel to different provinces.

Personally i hope it is at the size of Oblivion, or bigger. Would been dissapointing if it was quite smaller. Need room for lots of mountains, forests, rivers, lakes, open spaces etc ^^.

Exactly this.

More detail, variety, and more fantastical features like ice caverns, labyrinths, monster-haunted castles, underwater (under-ice-lake?) ruins, etc. would be nice. I think a smaller "physical" space can be made to seem larger and more explorable if it's designed and populated in the right way.

This is a direct sequel from OB (so I've heard) so I don't think those expansions would have taken place yet.. Maybe your character has something to do with it..

Map size doesn't really matter. they could just increase the scale and make things a bit further apart. Personally, I don't care about map size, I don't care about voice acting, I don't really care about graphics. I just want more to do than was present in Oblivion. Morrowind and Daggerfall had more of everything. I want that back.

well according to the map skyrim is a lot smaller than cyrodil, but that map isn't to scale, since the game daggerfall was huge

I really hope they don't do that ridiculous fast travel again and have actual modes of transportation like boats or carriages or something

It is a sequel to OB in terms of it being TES5 and most probably happening after OB storyline. OB is a sequel to MW, MW i sequel to DF, DF is sequel to Arena. Nothing new there.
Since TES5: Skyrim will most probably happen after OB and IC, Skyrim should be bigger, but filled with civil wars (if they can be called that now that there is no Empire any more).

the world can accually be smaler if they remove journal-entry fast traveling. It would still feel huge, no?

In morrowind I just coc somewhere If I couldn't be bothered walking.

Hopefully skyrim will be equal or bigger to Cyrodiil and have plenty of geographical distinction from one area to the next like a glacial zone, fjords, snowy fields, huge pine forest full of werewolves and werebears and wereboars, may i stress the
WEREWOLVES, WEREBEARS, WEREBOARS part, Bethesda can't leave them out!!!

I want the game to be bigger than Oblivion. I am really strange in this way; I dont really like jam-packed envirements. I prefer a huge loosly populated map.

It will be biiiiiiiiiig ! ! ! ! ! :-)

For the Landscape I want just a few things:
- in the north flat land with a little warmer climate, a few lakes ruins, mines etc.
- in the midlands big dense fir tree forest
- in the south towards Cyrodiil is the big mountain area with snow and a few trees
- all over the place should be Nordic-Tombs, graveyards from the civil-war, ruins, castles, etc. I am not sure about deadric ruins like in morrowind, but I would like to see them again...

I didnt mind fast-travel in Oblivion. However, i think the travelling system in Morrowind was better. They should go back to something similar to Morrowind, and instead give you more reasons to travel on foot/horse rather then fast travel. Add more things that makes it more worth it. Also, more travelling npcs.

Yeah. I'm that way too. No matter how much I end up travelling by foot, I'll always pick up the laziest solution. My fault, but I would prefer a game that would twist my arm in that regard. At least some system like silt striders.

From what I remember Skyrims just a little bit smaller then Cryodill but BGS can always scale the game down like they did in Daggerfell and make it the same size as Cryodill.
