Scalers

Post » Fri May 13, 2011 9:49 am

I was playing around with the scalers in order to improve the pixellation (I could barely read the log file), and found the perfect scaler in case anyone else wants to use it:

Open up DOSBOX.CONF, and in the render part, edit "normal2x" with "advinterp2x".

render
    - scaler=advinterp2x
You could also try advinterp3x, but I found that slows down things.

Now everything is very smooth, text is also much more legible! :)

Tried it in DOSBox - pretty nice, certainly has more clarity than hq2x or any of the other scalers. Still, I personally prefer to keep Daggerfall in its massive, chunky, pixellated glory and stick with normal#x.

I would too, but as I said the text is hard to make out. I also play in windowed mode, so that could contribute to it.

Also, if you change the renderer from "surface" to "ddraw" you can use custom resolutions. Using a dosbox frontend GUI like Dfend Reloaded makes everything MUCH easier to tinker with.

My current setup uses

renderer - ddraw
scaler - hq3x

window res 1024x768
fullscreen res 1280x1024

Wow, this just made daggerfall that much better for me! And I was just messing around with them, and I think I prefer 2xsai the most, considering it's the smoothest. super2xsai also, since it gives it a slight pixelation.

How do you go about changing the render without a frontend? I looked but couldn't find anything in the conf.

The technical term used in the config and the DOSBox console is "output". So look for that in your config, or if you just want to try it out temporarily and not save it in your DOSBox config, enter "output ddraw/opengl/surface/etc" in the command line before launching Daggerfall.

Yes, it is quite exciting! :D

Are the samples of the Doom Guy's face using those different scalers representative of the overall changes that will be made? In other words, does the sample accurately depict how the rest of a game (say, Daggerfall) would look using the scaler?

It did for me. Try out the one in the first post, pixellation will basically go away.

I've got a pretty good computer. What are the best settings for graphical quality?

Try them all and pick the one you like. It only takes five minutes. Some of them make the text easier to read. I didn't find the game looked significantly better with any of them.

"advinterp3x" seems to look the best to me. I am not getting any slowdown.

I don't like 3x because the window gets bigger. I prefer playing in a 640 resolution window, not full screen.

I'm using supersai2x now though.

I'll probably keep playing with them. Did you use ddraw and change the resolution? I am using 1600x1200 and that seems to help.

I'm using DDRAW but the rest is like this:

fullscreen=false
fulldouble=false
fullresolution=original
windowresolution=original
output=ddraw
autolock=true
sensitivity=100
waitonerror=true
priority=highest,pause
mapperfile=mapper.txt
usescancodes=true
