Scenic Screenshot Thread #3

Post » Tue May 03, 2011 4:19 am

I'm pretty sure people label thier shots appropriately so you know which contains screenshots of characters and landscape.

Edit: Oh and here's some old scenics while I'm at it.

Gotta keep this thread alive!

Bonus -- the most scenic screenshots I took showing off my new road texture for when I upload it to tesnexus:

...Actually I might want to smooth out the normal map, which means having to take a whole new set of screenshots haaaaaaa

Maybe I'll post some of my favorite shots to this thread before I upload new sets to my Picasa collection. Keeping it alive!

I take too many screenshots. I've got like 50 just of the changes made to NPCs by NPC New Clothes / Cyrodiil NPC Remodeling Projecting. Because seeing an NPC wearing a different outfit is just that noteworthy, I guess. looool

I've posted here before asking for submissions for ALS (Atmospheric Loading Screens), and while I know it may seem like ALS isn't being worked on (no update for months), that's mainly because I had to re-make the screen templates, and am now over a quarter of the way through re-making the 1700+ loading screens currently in ALS.

The real bummer is that Floydian asked for his screens to be withdrawn, so they will not be included in the new widescreen edition of ALS and I have to replace those 200+ screenshots with new ones. That's quite a lot of new loading screens to make, and I need screenshots for those. I have quite a lot of submitted shots from myself and also from people such as Daemondarque, banjo2E thekarithian, but seriously... 200 is a lot of loading screens. Gods, 1700 is a lot of loading screens to make...

So, I'll just make the friendly reminder and invitation; ALS needs screenshots: scenic, atmospheric and not character or action-focused. You can check the thread (in my sig) for more details.

Take a look at the four images I have posted on Nexus - see images under my http://www.tesnexus.com/modules/members/index.php?id=339693

You are very welcome to use them if they are up to your standards.

Alas, none of my pathetic captures are submittable. Even the most scenic of them contain some combination of my avatar and/or his companion(s), as can be seen in my contribution several posts above. Could you give more details on submission requirements? Do they need to be a certain minimum or maximum size (meaning, say, something like 1024x768 minimum as opposed to file size)? Do they need to be a particular ratio? (Almost all my postable captures are cropped to non-standard dimensions.) Should submissions be lossless? And so on...

Arguably better looking at the first post, but there's a bit of an information wall there... I think I may re-structure that at some point.

The guidelines are fairly simple (as written by Galahaut):

"There are no "action shots," character portraits, etc. Any loading screens with characters in them are not focused on the character."

"If you have any screenshots that you think would fit in with the rest of the screens (see Photobucket album), please send them to me. You can send them by email, upload them to a site, etc. Please try to leave them in their original size and quality, if possible. You will obviously receive credit if I use your screenshots. Please ask via email, PM, or this thread if you have any questions about contributing shots."

It's possible I'm pickier about characters being in shots than Galahaut was, but he turned down some of mine for having NPCs too central to the shot in a few cases, so maybe not. Non-standard dimensions are not necessarily a big issue, as long as the screens are going to fit into my http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll61/Revanchism/Working/test18-1.png without needing to be stretched, which would look ugly. The larger the screenshot, the more I have to work with when I'm making the loading screen, and so the more likely I am to use the shot. Screens that have obvious loss of quality from compression are also much less likely to be usable, but that doesn't mean I can't use high quality jpegs. I'd prefer pngs or the original bmps though.

While I do take and use my own screenshots, I am reliant in good part on people being willing to submit material, particularly when I'm busy working on other mods, so while I can be picky about the shots I include, I also do need to work with what is available unless I'm going to go back and take screenshots en masse once more.

Sadly, I don't really have the time to browse through web albums. While my internet connection is not slow, the time involved with browsing and downloading individual images is far too slow to be practical (click, click-click, click, click, click, ahh, one image downloaded) when we're dealing with hundreds of images. If you could upload an archive of your shots somewhere that I could download from, it would be much preferable and greatly appreciated; sorting through hundreds of images on my hard-drive is a relatively trivial time-expenditure.

I've taken few captures recently, scenic or otherwise. None are worth bragging about. Here's the best of a rather sorry lot, posted mainly to keep the thread alive.

After realizing my screenshots have been getting kind of mundane, I have re-committed myself to taking the best screenshots ever and I feel reborn! And to celebrate I've decided to start scaling pictures down to 1280x800 instead of 1024x640! More pixels! Ha ha!

http://i56.tinypic.com/opzf69.jpg. (plus there's an NPC-less version of this shot for ALS stuff, because I'm even more thorough now than before!)

There is no angle I won't track down for the perfect shot! So don't try to hide, angles!

http://i55.tinypic.com/11jnp1d.jpg

Don't think colors are safe either because I'll get EVERY SINGLE ONE! I will make them sing and dance in sweet harmony on your screen!

Good work!

I like 'em both, especially the first. That foreground archway perfectly framing the mid-distance rider and far-distant Imperial Palace tower really set it off. A composition within a composition as it were.

Thanks, I'm glad at least one other person can appreciate my meticulous framing of shots, even if that one might be too clever by half, hehe.

http://i55.tinypic.com/2ryjc4z.jpg. This time I framed an Oblivion gate! Also, bonus points if you spot one of the little gremlin creeps added by WAC.

Now I just need to prevent myself from spending all my time in the game taking screenshots. I already replaced actually playing Oblivion with my exhaustive mod hunting for quite a while there, at least with screenshots I have to actually run the game first, heh.

EDIT: Really nice shots, darkstone!

MORE EDIT: If you take note of the color variation between the last three shots I've linked, you might see why I don't want to use OBGE's bleach bypass shader or anything that filters colors. Just a little saturation boost and I'm quite happy. Though I am slightly curious what darkstone's using in those shots, he he

Thanks! Yeah, that's a greenie, I think. I always forget what they're called--as far as I know there isn't a master list of what WAC adds and I've always avoided those guys after watching them torment travellers on the roads, haha. So I call them creeps or creepies or gremlins or creepy gremlins or gremlin creeps or something. Maybe there is a master list of creatures and spawn locations somewhere I don't know of. You know, I actually did come across a visual list of creatures and spawn locations, but it was a couple years old, so I don't know how accurate it is now, considering the greenies are on it except they're blue and called smurfs, heh. WAC's development seems somewhat shrouded in mystery anyway.

So, http://i55.tinypic.com/2d8l6l3.jpg. I caught the attention of the leader of a group of soldiers before they left town to go battle daedra at a nearby Oblivion gate, so they ended up getting a pep talk, or something. I really do like the sense of immersion Enhanced Daedric Invasion adds, considering Oblivion gates opening all over the Empire's capital province should be met with some kind of Imperial reaction, right? Between EDI and ImpeREAL Unique Forts you might actually think the Empire is powerful!

EDIT: I knew that this Small_fix_for_Anvil_house-23178.rar I downloaded a while back would come in handy at some point. Just noticed the dent in that screenshot, heh.

I'd ask how you achieved that type of look for your game. But, it would lead me to attempting to mod my game the same way. Then my motherboard would blow up in my face. And I'd get depressed.

So, I'll just look at your screen shots and sigh.

Wish I was there.

Thanks,

I tried something a bit novel, for me these days, which is: screenshooting vanilla Oblivion. No texture replacers, no new landscapes, no LOD replacers, no weather mods, etc., etc.

But I did do some stuff with shaders, and tweaked one or two things in the ini. But that's all. And I'm pretty impressed with what can come out of that. Of course, I'm still not that great at taking shots, but still, I like the look of this...

edit: Oops, posted the wrong one! Hehe. Floating trees are not for the best, methinks. I'll leave that one there though, because it's kinda amusing.

Are you also using ENB? What is your fps like - is the game even playable?

Any photo shopping?

Yes I do use ENB aswell as OBGE and ScreenEffects. If I have all 3 activated my FPS drops to about 30 from around the 55 mark,so yes it is still playable which astounds me considering the amount of texture replacers I use.I`m pretty amazed my machine copes with what I throw at it as its by no means a high spec machine, I guess I`m just lucky in that respect.

I very rarely photoshop my images,I have about 800 shots in an album at TESA and perhaps 3 or 4 have been shopped and they were character shots which needed a few small jaggies cleaned up.What you see in my images is what I actually see ingame as I`m playing

Thanks for the interest shown in my screenies...much appreciated.

Okay, I think I'm about done tweaking my new hi-res road texture. I just want feedback on one thing, and figured I'd post some new screenshots here to get it, hehe.

http://i52.tinypic.com/10zmnv4.jpg

http://i51.tinypic.com/jr8yll.jpg

The only difference is that I blurred the normal map slightly for sample B, resulting in smoother edges on the rocks that make up the texture. I did this mostly because I didn't like some of the aliasing that resulted when viewing the road from far away, but I'm not sure it's necessary, and the sharper edges might look better. If you can't tell the difference, I don't blame you, haha.

http://i54.tinypic.com/2sbslm9.jpg.

I'm doing this texture because I have a burning hatred for QTP3's main road texture (you might notice I kept the smaller rocks lining the roads). It's a sequel to http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36843, which has issues with obvious tiling in too many circumstances for my liking, because it's simply the vanilla road texture multiplied by four to make it hi-res. My new texture has less obvious tiling than the QTP3 texture as well, so take that, despised QTP3 road texture. And I made it simply by taking the vanilla road texture and going nuts with the clone tool, tweaking it until it was evened out enough that obvious tiling became minimal.

Also, aside from what I think is a bad color, the QTP3 road texture bothers me because of the shape of its rocks. They're really round and curved and make me wonder how any man or horse could walk on them without tripping all over the place constantly. In sample A the rocks have sharp edges because the normal map isn't very blurry and due to the normal map being blurred in sample B they're smoother, but nowhere near approaching the roundness of QTP3's texture. I can't decide which I like more, but the difference might be so subtle no one will care when I finally post it on tesnexus.

I specialize in textures only a small niche of people will ever want, http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=36953.
