School Trouble :(

Post » Thu Jun 30, 2011 7:36 pm

For uni I work from the time I get home until the evening, perhaps 1-7 PM, and then play games after that. I do that for every weekday, and then play games all weekend. If I find myself getting distracted badly during the study session, or I feel I've studied enough, then I stop and play games because I know that pushing myself for much longer doesn't give me much of a return on the time I've invested. I get everything done, I get enough time to play games, and I avoid burn-out from overworking.

school < skyrim

You do realize that that says school is less than skyrim.

@ OP Also, if you can't even maintain a passing average and you are even debating on whether Skyrim or school is more important, you don't deserve or mature enough for Skyrim. :nono:

Do kids get graded for spelling these days?

Usually. Though the school system is going downhill in some areas, for the most part it's harder for students now than it has ever been. I blame the teachers.

Perhaps he was making a historical pun based on the first recorded flight by the Wright brothers? Or maybe he just subconsciously pulls up words from history class and uses them in sentences whenever they sound okay?

If you are struggling to get D- then you should sign up for social support now and begin draining society of the tax payers money ;)

Also people saying I don't deserve a game based off of my learning skills just go to hell I never should have started this topic :( people need to realize that not everyone is the same and I DO HAVE a learning disability. I don't take things in well at all. I have a hard time studying. Thanks for being [censored].

One of my best mates is heavily dyslexic yet he just graduated from university with a 2:1 in Engineering, if you fall back on your "disability" then you will always fail... Especially if you can't choose between doing well in school and/or playing a GAME which is always there for you to play.

That shouldn't stop you from being able to restrain yourself from Buying Skyrim. You're only as much of a victim as you choose to be.

Well guys I sort of have an issue with school in the way and it's summer as of now and skyrim releases when school is in. But problem is that if I don't pass all my classes junior and senior year of hs I don't grauduate and passing is d-....what do you guys think I should do because I know this game will be too distracting and make me get bad grades...and yes sadly a d- is hard for me? So what should I do? Weekends only gaming? Or play when I want lol or maybe even go homeschooled if possible. I'm kind of nervous please help guys thanks

I'm not sure just how much homework you get per day. But trust me, school first, Skyrim later. Let me explain why with a simple equation

Good grades = Good career prospects = high paying job = earning enough to pay your rent, feed yourself, buy lots of video games and tell anyone who objects to how you live to go take a long walk off a short bridge.

One of the advantages of being an advlt is that as long as you can support yourself, no one can tell you how to live your life. Being able to support yourself requires a job, and a job in which you are happy in (take it from me, THAT IS PARAMOUNT!) requires a good education. Work on getting your grade average higher, ask for help from teachers, thats what they're there for. And any time left free, play Skyrim all means.

Best of luck, hope you work it all out :)

Tell your mom to hide it until school is over.

Im gonna be pretty busy as well, but I'll play it on my free time. It will be very hard, since video games have gotten me into college trouble, but a lot in my life depends on this semester...so I may as well tell my mom to hide it!!

Don't take criticism so seriously. It will become a weakness of yours if you let it. Fight back by defeating the one who criticizes you by proving him wrong and then you can laugh in the face of challenges, because they can be overcome. I had a lot of criticism whilst growing up, and when I let some of it get to me, it stalled my motivation. Avoid that by outdoing your own expectations of yourself.

Reward yourself with indulgence in the wonderful fantasy that is Skyrim, AFTER you've assured that your unpleasant obligations are conquered.

Basically, look at my first post and try to enact that advice in your own way. It really helps in school, no matter what your natural academic talent may be.

When I was in high school there was no such thing as game ratings. But yes, I suppose Leisure Suit Larry would have been M-rated. :D

More like AO, no? :P

Do kids get graded for spelling these days?

I'd imagine, but I wouldn't be surprised if that skill is going downhill with the use of the handy spell checking tool in software.

people need to realize that not everyone is the same and I DO HAVE a learning disability. I don't take things in well at all. I have a hard time studying.

But the entire idea of learning disabilities is predicated on the idea that everybody is the same. The idea is that everybody is the same, learns the same way, learns at the same rate, and if you don't, then there must be something wrong with you. Short of autism, I don't think there really is such a thing as a learning disability.

Let me tell you a story that comes from Ken Robinson: Back in the day there was a little girl who couldn't sit still at school, and her teachers suggested that her parents should bring her to a child psychologist to figure out what was up with her. The doctor talked to the little girl for a few moments, turned a radio on, left the room, and told her mother, "Look at this." Through the observation window they saw the girl get up and begin dancing happily around the room. "There's nothing wrong with your child. She's a dancer. Enrol her in a dance school." So they did, and the little girl was amazed to see people just like her; people who 'needed to move to think.' The little girl (whose name I forget) went on to start a broadway company and become a millionaire from dancing. If that had happened today, a doctor would have given her drugs and told her to calm down, and she'd be flipping burgers or something.

Focus on school. Your reward for a good year will be Skyrim,

Anyway, the goodies and most bugs will be fixed way after the release of the game. If you wait, you can an improved version of Skyrim with at least one DLC, a few mods and the latest patch.

Red Guardian is giving sound advice.

Education first - absolute highest priority.

That is your main job now!

Even if your life is games, wIth a better job later, you can buy better gaming rigs and the latest games.

If you are young enough to be in school now, you might live long enough to have a holodeck :goodjob:

Think of how much better things will be later with a good education.

Also, if possible, take some summer classes, for a few more credits while you are waiting for Skyrim.

Do not let Skyrim come between you and your education - ever!

Yeah, definitely focus on school first. If you think the game will be too much of a distraction, then do the responsible thing and hold off on purchasing it for a while. This upcoming year is my last year of high school, and I signed up for 3 AP classes, so I won't be able to spend exorbitant amounts of time with Skyrim either.

School should be your top priority. You get out of school what you put into it -- it's a matter of effort, and the effort you put in now will make your future much simpler.

School should be first. After that its just a question of knowing how strong your willpower is. If its weak, don't even buy Skyrim. If its quite strong then, perhaps play it a bit at the same period as studying, but impose strict guidelines on the length of time you can play (i.e you can play for two hours after doing two hours study)

Like some people are saying.... priorities! I'm an A-B high school student, and I put my work before my games. Even saying that I have plenty of time on the weekends and after study time for gaming!
