Sci-Fi On TV

Post » Mon Aug 31, 2015 7:28 pm

We have a nice thread chatting about the Star Trek series (all of them). I thought it would be interesting to see what other (besides Star Trek) Sci-Fi TV shows people like(d) watching. There are LOTS of them :)

From the top of my head (with trailers or intros):

Battlestar Galactica (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNiPe0r1Aog or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jlQGxgdUn3E)

Stargate (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vqOL_w4yKws/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7ZXaSMffjo)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvGmRULJ4R8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxuUbizTVXM

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7RE6X4FbBfs

V (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0fDOdzY18XE or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQoSCEMzJYE)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbhxKrBe0AA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZY5lmbhrWk

And so many more that I am drawing a blank on.

And for some fun and laughs, Popular Mechanics has a http://www.popularmechanics.com/culture/movies/g156/the-50-greatest-sci-fi-tv-shows/ list :)

So... what Sci-Fi shows on TV do (or did) you enjoy watching?

I've watched the old Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy series.

Doctor Who is another one that is pretty entertaining once you get into it.

In no particular order, sci-fi that I've enjoyed on TV include but isn't limited to ...

Firefly

Babylon 5

Battlestar Galactica (new)

The Sarah Conner Chronicles

Firefly

Defiance

V (both, though I was a kid when the first one came on)

Firefly

Stargate (SG1, Atlantis and SGU)

Flash Forward

I'm sure there are many others that I'm not recalling.

Oh, I almost forgot ... Firefly.

I always loved Babylon 5...... if you only watch individual episodes, it seems corny, and childish... but, if you actually pay attention, you will find that there are sub-plots, within sub-plots, within sub-plots... and the character development was awesome.

I never actually caught any of these when they first aired, but have watched and enjoyed them after the fact.

Babylon 5 - Watched more times than I can remember. Shows it's age at times, but nothing I've seen since has accomplished what it has in terms of consistency, pacing and plot across a 5 season run.

Battlestar Galactica (re-imagined) - If it hadn't lost its way during season 3 it would easily be my favourite.

Firefly - Needless to say, wished it had been given longer.

Farscape - Loving it so far. It feels like a cross between Firefly and Star Trek that doesn't take itself entirely seriously all the time, really embracing the goofy parts and doing it well.

Red Dwarf - Haven't seen the new stuff, but the rest was great.

X-files (not the later seasons)

Stargate SG-1 (same ^)

Sliders

Quantum Leap

and a few cartoon ones like Ghost in the Shell if that counts.

Firefly

Stargate SG1 (before McGuyver left). There was also an animated Stargate Series that was good but I can't remember the name of it.

The final 3 episodes of Battlestar Galactica (second iteration)

Killjoys

I can't believe I forgot Firefly! That is my favorite Sci-Fi show of all time! Though I thoroughly enjoyed Brisco, was that Sci-Fi?

So many others I forgot (as I knew I would), like Babylon 5 (another favorite), Dr. Who and Red Dwarf (on my local PBS station for years), Quantum Leap (which I watched every week), and Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

@Haggar, I did not want to include anime (Ghost In The Shell), for that opens up literally billions of more choices. Great choice for inclusion

OH MAN! I was a young teenage boy in LOVE http://img004.lazygirls.info/people/erin_gray/erin_gray_erin_9_OUhnWNE.sized.jpg https://38.media.tumblr.com/3ab1d82ab79bff1f8d3c02ea4b40b66c/tumblr_n55btfZN741s0wwqso1_400.gif!

Babylon 5 is [censored] Shakespeare in space and Seasons 2-4 are some of the best drama that has ever been written.

Also that list had Thunderbirds but no Captain Scarlet. :stare:

Let us not forget Joe 90 and Fireball XL5 either.

The Planet of the Apes series

Survivors (70's)

1990

The Day of the Triffids

The Quatermass series

The Six Million Dollar Man/Bionic Woman

Kolchak the Night Stalker - inspired Chris Carter to make The X Files

Going way, way back - the 30's Flash Gordon series was quite fun and on TV a lot when I was young. No, I didn't see it at the pictures when it was first shown.

Here's an obscure one, wonder if anyone else remembers it - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HPXgQv6pwss&list=PL4lhsa5meT4BBeUbpwigPSznqC-eY7IMm

does X-Files count? i used to love it back in the 90s...

i enjoyed Battlestar Galactica (the original 1970s version)..

Quantum Leap wasn't to bad either..

I had mixed opinions on Andromeda.. on one side, i really liked the concept of the show.. on the other, it had some seriously cheesy acting and there were some episodes i just found rather poorly written..

I wouldn't really call GitS sci-fi.. more cyberpunk imho..

if we are throwing anime into the mix though, Cowboy Bebop would be up there

I think that one remains my favourite (the first two series, that is: it got a bit too silly even for me after that). Although it had no budget, not even for an apostrophe in its name, I rather liked the motley bunch of anti-heroes doing their thing in a dystopian future. For me it was kinda refreshing to see something where the future wasn't bright but was instead rather grubby, broken and unpleasant. That's old news now, but back then it seemed quite revolutionary.

I guess that led to other things like Max Headroom: I really enjoyed the feature film, though I couldn't quite get into the Americanised series that followed it.

I think Blakes 7 is also the only show where the Main character is charged by the state for Pedophillia and other child related crimes. I certainly cant think of a another tv show that had such a shocking crime that the Federation trumped up to get Blake sent to a Penal colony.

I also loved the fact that the Human based Terran Federation were the .. bad guys. We never really got to see 'aliens' in the show.. bar say 2 episodes with the 'Andromedans'.

Whats peoples views on the current stock of Scifi shows we have? There isnt a lot anymore, 2 really come to mind.. those being Dark Matter and Killjoys. I must say I prefer personally Killjoys which has a far cooler premise and setting than Dark Matter. Dark Matter feels a little too tropey. They had to go Asian to find the Sword Master and the gun nut is white and anglo. I just think they really should of cast against type.

Blakes 7: Convicted child molester murders jailer and escapes in a stolen vehicle, aided by a an international arms smuggler and a bank fraudster.

Then they murder a clergyman and flee with a burglar and a murderer.
