Science or Fantasy?

Post » Sat Jul 12, 2014 1:27 pm

Random question... But would you prefer to live in a science-fiction universe (like Star Wars, Star Trek, Doctor Who, etc) or a fantasy world of some sort? (Like Middle Earth, Nirn, etc).

Or are you the middle guy and prefer our world as it is or a world of mixed elements?

Me? Honestly... I love the fantasy world a lot more but there are some science-fiction/techno stuff I would like to have so something of a mix. (Maybe Equestria? If that would count).

definitely fantasy. getting eaten by a dragon while harvesting ingredients for s magic potions sounds delightful.

To read about? Fantasy. To live in? Sci-fi. The wonders of science beat dying of some pseudo-medieval disease. Unless I can be a mage, then I'd be tempted to go with fantasy.

edit: wait, there's a mixed option. Technomancy ftw.

Sci-Fi. Most fantasy worlds would be a dreadfully dangerous place to live.

I like sci-fi a bit more than fantasy, but absolutely hate the standard settings and cliches. I'd rather have mediocre fantasy in an original setting than standard sci-fi.

Fantasy for me but I'd like a few inoculation jabs before I entered that sort of world.

Agreed. I'd imagine the sci-fi world would be a much more comfortable life. but then again... magic.

Sci-fi, because screw gods and demons, give me a world where things can die normally.

Same thing with Sci-Fi technically speaking... Then again, I'm paranoid about technology.

Science fiction is pretty much a subgenre of fantasy. It just has more defined boundaries. I like universes which never make much sense in spite of the efforts of scientists/natural philosophers/mystics. Also I tend to like low fantasy, not to say that high fantasy can't good with sufficient detail.

I didn't vote because I'd be happy either way.

Why not both, Shadowrun combines the two, and it seems like an interesting place. Though everything is still end of the world quests but hey that's life.

Sci-fi, I'd rather be able to board a ship to some far off star system than live in some crappy medieval town where life seems very miserable.

Plus, death star beats any wizard.

I prefer our world. I find it interesting enough that I wouldn't want to spruce it up with contrivances like magic or ridiculous technology.

Read Inversions by Iain M. Banks. Tell me if it's Sci-Fi or Fantasy.

Genre? No, pigeon-box.

Science fiction and fantasy are two different subgenre of speculative fiction. Just because they overlap sometimes doesn't meant science - fiction is a subgenre of fantasy.

I definitely prefer fiction of an ancient nature to that of science fiction.

With regards to fantasy then I prefer a fantasy realm influenced by Earth (just not too European throughout & not too Tolkien or D&D)

Star Wars to me wasn't so much science fiction but more futuristic fantasy. That rates highly in my likes.

Morrowind, Skyrim, Game of Thrones & Witcher are my favourite world's.
