Scientist plan to create a star

Post » Sun Nov 08, 2009 10:50 am

Can they also make mini black holes?

The mini black holes by themselves are absolutely no threat to us - that's why the LHC went ahead so quickly. This sun, however, could be, which is why we need the black holes to throw at it in case it gets out of hand.

Explain the wisdom behind this, please.

1. Mini-star? No such animal. A star is a massive volume of hydrogen pressured into atomic fusion. We already have fusion-reaction weapons. The biggest of them are exhausted in a matter of seconds. A fusion reactions requires the non-stop conversion of hydrogen into helium. How would we acquire enough fuel to keep a perpetual reaction going (never mind containing it)?

2. If they were talking about a fusion reaction which involves say a constant stream of 10 hydrogen atoms at any moment (limited reaction) then you'd not be making a sun...just a perpetual fusion reaction.

I doubt anything major will happen with it, I mean everyone thought when the Hadron thingy fired it was going to create a black hole and kill us all. And... Well I think we're still here. :P

Maybe once we create a star we could move on to something cooler. Maybe we could build a whole solar system. :chaos:

from what we were taught in highschool -gasp- so.long.ago...
that fusion is suppose to peter out by itself if fuel is shut off to it.

right?

Yes. This isn't a TV show, and scientists aren't morons. An actual full-scale attempt doesn't come before years of thought and experimentation, and nuclear power isn't some magical super-force that can kill us all without constant monitoring. Yes, it requires constant monitoring, but that's to keep it going at all, not to keep it in check.

Speaking about dangerous fuel sources, did you hear about that oil spill?

Why yes I have and think that we should move on from oil to other sources like hydrogen at some point, if you are implying however that nuclear power is just as dangerous as oil then the reason for the oil spill is because of imcompetent workerers as oil spills occur more often versus nuclear plant meltdowns and thanks to strict security measures there has yet to be anymore 3 mile island incidents due to also improved technlogy providing the plant has the proper equipment.

If you are only wondering about my views on the oil spill however then I apologize if I'm coming off as paranoid. :)

Nothing will happen. Well, Not until 2060 when the Oil Wars start.

Get real man! The scientists all lie, they just pretend we're running out of oil so they can spend billion of dollars on their hobby projects. YOU CAN'T TRUST SCIENTISTS. Geez man, didn't you read the thread?!

And here's my additional sobering addition to the discussion:

To all the naysayers about how dangerous it is. Everything in human history has been dangerous. The Atom Bomb, Gunpowder, and 70's fashion, but we all went there anyway.

 Sorry, ladies and gentlemen, but this thread has already been won.

On the one hand, I have a sincere believe that nuclear power is generally safe.
On the other hand, I also watch FlashForward.

Do you guys seriously believe oil use is any safer? A lack of it brought us such worlds as Mad Max, which brought us Beyond the Thunderdome.

We've got to stop this haphazard use of oil before we have to LIVE with the Thunderdome and all of its terrible acting and inane plot points!

I believe oil is more dangerous than nuclear power and I believe we need to move away from oil, as well.

Now when I think, this isn't so bad idea.

But how is that transformed to Fusion Engine? Power plants alone wont help us much.
Planes wont fly with electricity. :nono:

Hook up a big enough battery and there's no reason why they couldn't. All fuel is for is to generate energy, the plane doesn't care where it's from. Bring on microwave-powered satellite energy!

Energy needed for speed enought to fly = Huge Battery = Lots of Weight = Need more speed = Larger Battery = More weight = More Power = Endless loop

And there is not enough satelites for all planes in the world.

Flight might actually be an issue. It's not as simple as "build a big enough battery." Petrol is very concentrated energy and making batteries that can contain the same amount of energy with the same weight and space is a challenge that, as far as I know, has yet to be overcome.

Fuelcells might be an option, I've heard it's also quite concentrated energy and I KNOW that you could use electrical energy, i.e. fusion power, to splint (is that the correct english term?) water to hydrogen, meaning a quite efficient way to store energy on flights.

As I said though, I'm not sure of the effectiveness of fuelcells, they too may be too limited.

The main issue with electricity and planes is that it CAN work just fine for propeller aircraft, but jets fundamentally need a fuel source they can compress and release into the jet engine to create thrust, which electricity can not do.

But that's just fine. The whole thing about all these different kinds of alternative resources is that each part of the world and industry has their own needs. If jets still need to use oil, that's just fine. What really matters is that we get the millions upon millions of oil using vehicles off the road and replaced with alternative styles. Of course, for that to work we'll need power plants that use alternative resources (doesn't really help if millions of people use electric cars that need to plug into a power grid powered by coal, which would make the plant burn more fuel to provide the energy, or build more plants).

Of course, the absolute zenith of renewable resources is having a power grid totally powered by solar/wind/hydroelectric/geothermal/(And maybe one day) fusion energy such that our vehicles, industry, and appliances are all powered by totally renewable (this is the part people focus on far too little. As more and more gatherers of renewable resources are made, prices will drop. Prices going up is practically impossible when you do not rely on foreign resources. I'm looking at you, gas prices!) and clean (Maybe Mexico City or Las Angeles won't be surrounded by lung murdering smog in the future!).

Besides, I need my fusion engine to create my mech. Now I just need some myomer fiber and a few medium lasers...

Your looking for "split." Pretty damn close.

Personally, I like this idea. Having a fusion power plant would be awesome. Though I wouldn't want to work there during an electrical fire. (Seems to me that this is the biggest risk, something shorting out and setting your lab coat on fire)

If you are thinking a fuelcell, you might as well just burn the hydrogen directly in a hydrogen jet engine. If we were to get fusion nailed down, we would probably do this. Use the cheap power from a fusion reactor to get hydrogen from water via electrolysis. Another alternative is bio-fuels, though for use in a plane you have to warm it up otherwise it will freeze.

Wow, this could be discovery of the century. Lets hope this fuels our countries rather than our wars. Seriously, any scientific breakthrough is often exploited by the military, i dont want them dropping f bombs everywhere. <<< EDIT;thats fusion bombs

Lets hop this can be packaged into a spacecraft for interplanetary travel. Im no scientist but i think teh laser is pretty huge, too big for a spacecraft.

You do know what a hydrogen bomb is, right? It is a fission reaction that starts a fusion reaction. So, yeah, We've had bombs that use the power of fusion for over half a century now.

Oh, i thought they were just fission, i didnt know that created fusion, how confusing...

So let me get this straight, in a h bomb the fission reaction splitting the atom is used to fuse the atoms to create energy. Science hurst my brain :sadvaultboy:
