Plans to be ready in 2012. Coincidence? I hope so. :)

World's not going to end. Instead since it's the start of a new cycle and it doesn't mean it's the end of the world, then this might be the big change that's going to happen.

Say what you want about humanity. We can make freaking stars. That's just badass.

I hope they're successful, nuclear fusion would be an amazing achievement for humanity.

I agree, if this doesn't end up killing millions of people, it'd be a great leap in science and technology. And it could kill millions of people. What happens to a star when it dies?

Well, if we manage to make mini-stars for energy we might finally have that energy source we've needed to settle on Mars.

... Why ? Chances are we will kill millions/billions with it, a nuke is bad enough now we have a laser that creates stars...
As for 2012 the calender is a circle, a cycle so it dosent end, it has happened before.

Plans ready for 2012.

First attempt at making a star scheduled for: 21/12/2012.

But this is pretty awesome.

I still dont see how they can have the energy of a star on earth without it killing us all.

Thanks for the link, I'll post it in the OP.
I think if we could actually get this to work, and we could control it, it would launch our world into a new era. The sky is the limit with fusion as an energy source. We could improve so many things.

I saw this on sxephil. In my opinion I think it's too dangerous. But the having a mini star powering everything on earth would be fascinating.

Edit
To all the naysayers about how dangerous it is. Everything in human history has been dangerous. The Atom Bomb, Gunpowder, and 70's fashion, but we all went there anyway.

Nuclear fusion has been done using lasers before in a similar fashion, the problem has always been sustaining it long enough for the energy coming out offsetting the energy used to initiate it

Likewise all attempts at fusion on earth have been many times hotter than the regular sun due to the lack of gravity playing a role in permitting fusion, so hotter temperatures are needed instead.

First off, 2016 is the end of the world. Why can't scientists leave things alone?

Yeah, everything we do has a dangerous aspect to it, invention in it's very nature can be dangerous.
But the Atom Bomb never had the yield to destroy the entire planet, nor did gunpowder. I was worried about the LHC Collider, but this definitely takes the cake.

I don't like the sound of the small star in earth surface. What I know, stars tend to be pretty uncontrollable and what about all that lethal radiation which stars usually create?

I just wish they would make fusion by using Helium 3, not by poking around with the greatest energy source and (explosive) in entire universe.
