I'm Scraed To Ask...

Something screwed up my map file. http://i.imgur.com/wFxp2AS.png. I am in The Bannered Mare when I took this. Notice my marker is high above Whiterun, in the clouds. I can not see any further South. Falkreath does not even show up.

I first tried "3D Paper map - Texture 2" and got an error message about the map file when I opened my map for the first time. But I had also installed "A Personal Notebook." So I uninstalled 3D Paper Map and installed the one I used to use, "A Quality World Map", but it no longer has a paper map option. The map still looked screwy.

I uninstalled the journal, but the vanilla map is not going back to the way it should be. Is there a "map file" I can grab to set it right again, or is this part of the massive skyrim.esm file? Or maybe skyrim - textures.bsa?

Are you using any map mods right now?

If not you can try game file verification.

The error message sounds like it is SkyUI not being able to add the option to use the search field for the map. You can disable that option in SkyUI cinfigurations for the having SkyUI managing the maps.

No, I uninstalled all map mods AND the journal mod. I forgot about file verification! I'll try the SkyUI config part, first though. Thanks for the ideas :smile:

[EDIT]

I first tried SkyUI (the "map portion" in the config tab) to no avail. Then I tried verifying files. One file did download but the map looks the same as the original pic. It was a SkyUI error message that started this all off, now that I recall :)

If you are using this map mod:

http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/25501/?

It says what to do about that error code:(from the readme)

I've been using this map mod for a while now with now problems, no distant terrain color weirdness like I got with another big map mod.

Since you removed it though, it looks like the height of the markers are still at the level that the mod uses (it has to raise the map markers so they work properly with the map mod)

I take it you don't use a mod manager to handle mod installation?

If not, to remove the mod you have to delete this ini file (as well as any other files the mod adds.)

Warburg's 3D Paper World Map - Texture 2.ini

I would guess you have to remove that ini file for your marker levels to return to normal (hopefully)

For some odd reason, IT IS BACK! I re-installed Warburg's map (texture 2) and I am back at the correct angle :)

I had done those steps before and nothing changed. This time it took hold. Thanks :)

Awesome! Glad it worked for you. :foodndrink:

Just keep in mind, if you ever load an older game and get the error again, just go into SKYUI and untoggle that Map Menu setting again. Once you save your game with it, though, it should stay that way.

I think your mistake was not to put Warburgs Map at the very end of your load order, because then it is right in your face. When you reinstalled it you left it at the end and so it worked.

True, Eudyptes. If you use the latest version of LOOT, it always puts Warburg's map esps last (at least on my list). The author says to put it last.

Also, I just want to add - in case anyone didn't know, or never tried this - if you use these settings in SkyrimPrefs.ini :

bShowFloatingQuestMarkers=0
bShowQuestMarkers=1
bShowCompass=0
It hides the floating compass markers and compass, so you don't have a magical guide pointing the way, but the markers will still show up on the map, (since the NPCs don't really/rarely give you any kind of directions in Skyrim). I find this alot more immersive, and you will actually pay more attention to the game visuals and locations than if you are following an arrow, also you actually have a reason to refer to your nice looking map. ;)
