Post » Sat Jan 30, 2010 4:06 am

This has probly been asked but is there a use for scrap? the only time ive found a use for it is in Nellis, can you at some point use it to repair things or maybe even sell it to someone?

Scrap metal and scrap electronics are needed to make weapon repair kits at workbenches.
Also, for one of the unmarked quests at McCarren you need scrap metal. And for various others.

There's tons of scrap, so don't worry about it. You'll just need to go looking for more ;)

It is easy to run out of scrap metal, unless you steal all you see

I steal everything. Especially if it's on my shopping list and I can get away with it.

Which is what you should be doing. The Karma system for stealing is stupid anyway.

I"m in the middle of no where, HOW IS THIS STEALING!?!?! And yet it is, sometimes.

Steal everything that you need, make the good choices in quests and you can still have good or very good karma.

Or you can just be a rat bastard and steal stuff, too.

3 most prominent things you need scrap for:

1. 100 scrap metals/tin cans for an unmarked quest at Camp McCarran, from the guy who sells armor and guns.
2. Unlimited scrap metals for the Boomers. Just increases your karma with the faction.
3. Weapon repair kits. Each kit takes 3 metal and 1 electronics. Runs out real fast, I collected metal through the entire game up to level 30 and it was enough for TWENTY EIGHT kits. Considering you need about 5(?) to repair a sniper to full health, that's abysmal.

Also Scrap Metal can be 'broken down' for lead.. for making ammo

Weapon repair kits are are really all I craft short of ammo. They saw the game. The ingredients of duct tape, wrenches, wonder glue, scrap electronics, and scrap metal are typically found in clusters in many toolboxes.

SPOILER
Gas station next to novice is a great loot spot for repair kits

There are a couple of instances where you can use scrap with other material to fix certain things... like Ed-E.

I've hardly run out ever when I've wanted scrap metal. Usually I just leave it behind because i just don't need it that much.

You can get scrap metal off of nearly every killed robot. REPCONN HQ will net you about 20 easy alone, at least if you want to kill everything there.
H&H Tools will likely net you at least 10
Sasparilla Bottling Plant will net you between 10-15 (Bots and junk lying around)
Most vaults (save 22 (plant vault) I think) usually has a fair bit.

The stuff is simply NOT hard to find at all. Usually I don't bother getting it after I've got a good few-thousand lead and 10 repair kits. (And with jury rig, i don't even need those anymore either)

If you're having that much trouble finding it.. you're somehow just looking in the wrong places.

And you can generally find 1 scrap metal for every 2-3 toolboxed/tool-cabinets at any given location

Scrap metal for me is never a problem. Duct tape on the other hand is is short supply for me. I am always happy when a merchant restocks his.....I use them for weapons kits and powderbombs. I guess it is just like in real life, without duct tape; civilization as we know it will cease to exist.

for the tinker that wants scraqe at gun runners, bring him bent cans, as far as i know, nobody else wants bent cans. there is use for scraqe metal and undamaged cans.

3 Scrap metal, one scrap electronics and a couple of sensor modules and you can fix it with no skill requirements.

End of my last character I had built up a stock pile of over 50 weapon repair kits and at least used an equal number. Current character I've already cranked out around 30 kits before meeting Mr. House. Take the time to pick Novac, and the Repconn factory, clean of the stuff needed to make them. At 100 repair skill these kits restore 30% CND on a weapon. So burning 2-3 kits will have a low CND weapon ready for use, or selling for allot more caps than the cost of the repair kits used.

I am confused by the whole karma/stealing system anyways. Some enemies you MUST kill but still get penalized for looting their lair...very arbitrary. Cass hated me (for what I Have read was based on my stealing as I had been playing as a good guy for NCR, etc). Also, I tend to steal regardless of consequence but it doesn't always reflect in my general status (might appear benevolent when hated by various factions).
I think the rep/karma system was very rushed and didn't have a lot of consideration.
My favorite mixed karma moment...
Sitting next to the informant in the ultra-luxe sauna...one bench is red, one bench is green...suggesting some type of karmatic segregation.

BETHESDA!!! Fine tune this non sense! There is no reason I shouldn't be able to loot from any hostile faction without consequence...you arbitrarily let me loot from some areas in a given faction but not others.

The same is true for stealthy kills...I am maxed out on sneak. I sandmanned Jack in his cot in Nellis with no one around only to exit outside to be attacked by the Boomers. I couldn't have been more discrete!

Beware, I tried to do all the quests the best way possible and stole compulsively at the same time and I managed to get my karma down to neutral.
