Scrapping to reduce settlement size

What is the best way to scrap stuff to reduce settlement size?

I read somewhere that storing and removing weapons in the workbench works some how but. I can't find it again.

I thought it was more scrapping houses to create a smaller perimeter to fence or wall in

Drop a bunch of junk on the ground and scrap it. Weapons with lots of mods work best since they break down into so many different parts but you can use extra armors, desk fans, typewriters, vegetable starch, whatever.

Be aware that somewhat large increase of a settlement area can mess up things, but as far as I seen from other posters, it's ok (for now). More minerals/metals an item have, more free area released. Scrapping laser weapons or good guns should do. Armor that keep only few metals, less free area.

1 - Grab a few good weapons and store them in your workshop.

2 - Enter and leave workshop mode (not sure if necessary but its what I do)

3 - Go to workshop and remove weapons

4 - Enter and leave workshop mode again (not sure if necessary but its what I do)

5 - Drop all weapons on the ground

6 - Enter workshop mode

7 - Store weapons again using your workshop mode to highlight them on the ground and use the store command (tab on pc by default)

If done correctly without scrapping a single thing you should see your settlement size level go down

All you need to do is drop anything into the area, I even rolled a tire and large drum before into the area that was near by and it worked. Weapons with lots of mods lowers it the fastest.

So is that the only thing the scrapper perk is good for? I have read it is not worth it for the individual items, but it may be worth it for reducing settlement size?

Scrapper is good perk to choose, if youre lack of minerals and metals. Junk you can put into workshop to get minerals and metals. You cannot do that with weapons and armor. These have to be scrapped first. Scrapping items on the ground *increase* max settlement building size.

Not sure you should rely on an exploit that might get patched.

Also, scrapper rank 1 is handy as any pipe rifle no matter how basic yields copper.
