Screenshots broken

Post » Mon Aug 03, 2015 4:17 pm

So, I've just noticed that some (not all) of the screenshots I took since I've started my newest character, are completely messed up. That means they are not showing anything but a random amount of seemingly randomly colored lines and stuff, on a black background. But some of the screenshots are just fine and like they should be. I have no idea what's causing this, since I didn't install any new mods before I have created my new character yesterday evening. The only thing I did, is to move 6500 screenshots (26.1 GB) out of the main Skyrim-folder to somewhere else.

Now if I would have to make a really wild guess, I'd guess that this somehow made something happen faster, which in turn causes some mod to do something that occassionally messes up my screenshots; which wasn't a problem before, because thousands of screenshots slowed that certain something down. However... I can't really imagine that to be the cause; especially since I wouldn't know how mods would be able to mess up screenshots.

I did install the newest driver for my graphics card these days. However, I didn't have that problem after that... only since yesterday, where I've moved the screenshots... maybe it's the driver (and not a mod)... (see my wild guess above)?

Uff... I should probably stop speculating, as I'm not an expert with that kind of things. So yeah... does anyone here have an idea what might be causing it, and how I could fix it?

Some examples of messed up screenshots:

I thing that's a resolution problem. Pictures are distort under some resolutions (1366x768 for example). However 1360x768 works fine.

1280x720 works ok also.

I had that problems a couple years ago. Can you try at 1920x1080 with the PrtScn button ??? (or set Skyrim in a diffrent resolution)

I'm playing Skyrim on a 1600x900 resolution since I've gotten it on PC (almost exactly two years ago), and I've never had that problem before. I've taken more than 10800 screenshots with that resolution, and not a single one was messed up like that. So I kinda doubt that the resolution is a problem all of a sudden. Also, some screenshots still are just fine; only some of them get messed up.

Edit: Might try it out a bit later anyway.

Hm no, I do not use any ENB (I take it that it's a series of graphic mods or so). It was working just fine for years. Then I've upgraded my graphics card driver in hopes of fixing a black frame around conjured weapons (that I didn't recall having ever seen before). Didn't help, but I've found a solution online that reducing antialiasing from 8 to 4 will help. And it did help. However, I've taken quite a few screenshots since then, and they all came out right. But ever since I've moved those thousands of screenshots out of the folder, new screenshots appear to be randomly normal or just a blurred mess. I can go ingame, take 5 screenshots and sometimes 2 will be okay and 3 messed up, and sometimes only one is okay.

No, I'm using the Print-Screen key. Always did. (I don't have the steam-overlay activated.) The screenshots get saved directly into my Skyrim-folder, in bmp-format.

Hm, I did not install or activate anything new inbetween the time where it was working and the time when it broke. Like all screenshots were normal until july 31st. On august 1st, I made a new character... first screenshot normal, second one broken... and from then on, the screenshots appear to randomly be normal or broken... I've also tried logging in with other characters, but that didn't help.

I might have to switch to taking screenshots with the steam-overlay, but still...

Hmm, very strange. PrtScn should work fine. Try through steam also...you have nothing to lose.

Might also try some other games if you have them.

What mods are you using?

Steam works fine. Well except that it lets me chose a folder to save the screenshots in, but then saves them in the standard folder anyway... but ya, I don't really mind that. I'll use it if I can't get the other option fixed. Just gotta remember to hit F12 instead of PrintScreen.

Well, I've taken some screenshots with PrintScreen in GW2 since then, and they were all normal.

As for the mods... I've taken some screens of my NMM. You can see there which mods are currently active: http://oi61.tinypic.com/315ip1j.jpg
