Seasons in Skyrim?

Post » Wed Aug 18, 2010 5:00 pm

After watching the latest Skyrim Trailer on xbox live a couple of times i noticed that we mostly see winter- landscape. Of course there is a logical explanation for this when we look at map of Tamriel.

However i noticed that we are infact in introduced (yes everyone notice that) to different types of landskapes, what i would describe mostly as forrest. What is important is that we can clearly se the difference between them.

This clearly looks like fall:

We can clearly se the leafs are orange/brown but also the grass is turning brown.

In this image i would also assume it's early fall:

On other pictures we can clearly see that both the grass and the leafs are green witch is a pretty clear indication of spring/ summer.

Do you think there will be in-game seasons? Would like to see seasons in Skyrim?

However there is also the strong possibility that these screens just infact are taken from different areas in the game. Personaly i belive they are screenshots from different areas in Skyrim.

I'm sorry if there allready is a thread about this or it's been denied/confirmed by Bethesda allready.

Edit: Could possibly the new game-engine handle seasons in Skyrim?

I think those are just different kinds of regions. There is a region that's called Fall Forest...

Anyway, I still think that seasons would be absolutely great.
Dynamic snow would help greatly to accomplish this.

A blend-shader could be added to make leafs change colour in autumn.

Colour-gradings could be added to change the atmopshere fitting for the season, etc etc.

I'd love multiple seasons with the effects, but many regions only have two seasons though i'm no expert. Still..i think it would be totally awsome to have that.

As long as the game world only changes slightly by it, it would be totally unnecessary if the whole Skyrim got covered in snow at winter, over 2 feet of snow everywhere, and then on summer there wouldn't even be any snow at all. Instead, the snow line on mountains could get closer down or move further up, the leave colors could also work in the same way. NPCs could dress just slightly differently in the different seasons, but I do really not want totally realistic seasons, something subtle yet noticeable.

I guess i havnt been studying the map of Skyrim to well. It just seemed like there could be possibility for ingame seasons with the new engine and stuff. I guess we'll have to wait for TES: VI if we want seasons.

Technology-wise there are great possibilites.
But judging from what it seems so far, no seasons.

I still hope for them to be implemented though :)
Would be awesome.

Seasons? I'm at lvl 44 in Oblivion with about 100 game days of play. So that's one maybe two seasons touched when you're stretching it. For seasons to happen they have to force in game mechanics that advances time somehow, and I've made several suggestions on how to achieve that. However, my idea of seasons only revolves around variations in day length. It wouldn't affect seasons wrt texture sets used and climate. Not impossible, but sounds like a stretch given the medium of the game.

So yeah, it's something I dream about if the mechanics was in to allow it, but it's not something I expect to happen.

I agree, the seasons shouldnt have any major effects like covering the whole map in snow, but perhaps there could be different regions who are effected to season change diffrently. As we know from the real world there are multiple places that isnt really affected much by seasons, and on the other side there is areas that are heavly impacted by seasons.

This might be incredbly hard to program, I'm really not that good with programing etc.

You've never been to the north have you?

The siberian summer looks like this:

Actually, I prefer the regional weather system. While a seasonal system would be more realistic, gaming in an extended winter landscape for a long period of time would get kind of depressing after a while. I like snow in the mountains, but there's definitely a more oppressive sensation with winter. After a while, I'd want to visit an area that has warmer colors and more vibrant surroundings. For instance, in Oblivion after having spent several quests in the northern region around Bruma, I'd travel to Anvil just to lighten my mood for a bit. The coastal region always "cheered me up," so to speak.

This was talked about and hoped-for by a lot of us before we saw any screenshots (or the gameplay video). I sure hope there are seasons, but with the natural variation in environments (and weather?) Skyrim has already -- snowy mountains, green hills, tundra, etc -- they're not exactly a deal breaker for me.

Wow, that's gorgeous.

Not sure. I don't think full, complete seasons with all kinds of visual effects.

So I'd have to say no for now.
It's one of the reasons seasons for Skyrim would be great. Would be something very unique for Skyrim and something for devs to show off and mention at game conferences.
