Seasons!?

Post » Sun Apr 03, 2011 10:42 am

Seasons!

We know that snow is dynamic, meaning that it will act like real snow. It will fall... and stay on the ground. It won't magically disappear through everything.
This means that if we get seasons, winter would actually act like winter! Areas where there are no snow would have snow... and water would turn to ice?

For autumn we could get some sort of blend shader that changes leaves to orange/yellow. Leaves could also start falling :)
For spring nature starts to come alive again. More birds and wildlife start to appear. Leaves start to grow.
For summer life is at its fullest. There's much less snow, if any in most southern and "middle" areas. Forests are lush.

For all seasons a color grading feature would be a must. This could easily be done through the weather or something.

What do you think?
Do you want them to be included?
Do you think they're already included?

In this thread there is also a poll about... well, what you think about seasons. Want them or not?

Personally I think it would be awesome. Plain and simply awesome :)

If this is in the game I believe it would be on the track to truly make me happy. The little details so far make me very happy if they added this I would be astounded.

Me too! I think that it would make Skyrim really stand out from other games. I've seen no other game accomplish this. Ever.

The snow info really gives me hope for this  But I know nothing about this sort of thing, so I have no idea how easy/possible the rest of it would be to do.

If seasons are in( god I hope) They could put in holidays as well(god I really hope) Those types of details not only add to immersion but they also give a point to having a day and month in the game. I would love to see special events going on for different holidays throughout the seasons.

nice, seasons for sure, those trees in the screens seem to suggest some form of autumn.
im PRAYING that its in game.

also what about dynamic weather effects? if it builds up too much will it effect your movement. will wet roads get muddy/slippery.
temperature effects? will your character suffer a debuff or even risk his life in the bitter cold?
things like this are what i have wanted for a long time. some penalty to traveling in the weather unprepared.
i want to see something along those lines.
though it looks like Todd's character likes to show skin in all weather...

The reason I said "Do you think they're already included?" is because I haven't read the entire article, just some.
Or perhaps a dev had made some implication that they will be included that I haven't noticed.

This thread is meant to spark the idea for Bethesda to include them if they aren't already.
It would be utterly awesome :)
The dynamic snow caught my eyes on this a bit extra. Also, as you, gave me more hope for it. A lot more hope.

Were holidays mentioned as a possibility for Oblivion, right before it came out? I seem to remember something about that.
A harvest festival would be cool.

Strong weather effecting the character is sadly unlikely though I would love to see a blizzard force you to at least wear some warm clothing otherwise your characters stamina would drain and then your health thus making you have to find shelter and make a fire but asking for something like that may be too much...plus I can see people complaining about it being annoying.

Are you sure? I thought it just meant it wouldn't pass through solid objects anymore, so that if you're standing under a bridge there isn't snow falling straight through it.

If they can do that with snow im sure they can change the color of leaves! I have a good feeling for seasons. I mean, if it wasnt snowing all year round why bother making the snow fall the way it is?

I don't really see the point, it'd take forever to go from season to season in game.

The autumn trees we saw in one of those screens I'd presume is sort of in the same situation as that place outside chorrol in Oblivion with all the orange leaves.

Yes I'm sure. They said it's not a present texture. It falls naturally on objects, given its size and shape.
It's a huge improvement. Not only for TES, but for all games. Somewhat groundbreaking I'd say :)

How long it takes depends on the length of a day in the game. The point is to add something special to the game that would make it feel more alive and less like a static world that just sits there.

This is kind of how I feel :P I'm trying to not get my hopes up, as tbh I never really expected it to be in TES:V (more like VI) - but ooooh it would be good!

It'd feel really weird to me and not very immersive if a day cycle takes 5-10 minutes. Besides, I don't know if it'd be possible to put all of that information on the disc in the first place, I mean people want the game to be bigger than Cyrodiil, okay fine, but now you want everything in the game world to change too? On top of all that?

Why wouldn't we want it? It would make exploring soooo much more enjoyable. It gives you a whole new feeling. We've all experienced a real year irl haven't we? ;)

I'm sure Bethesda could come up with some fairly immersive way of making the time pass. It could be done by shortening the number of days, that otherwise have zero meaning.

disks can hold alot more nowdays.
even dvds are up to like 8 gigs
correct me if im wrong.
also dont most consoles have hard-discs
why not have 2 game disks.
dont worry about having enough room. just make sure you can back up your drive before you install skyrim

Skyrim's engine is going to be a whole new monster considering everything they've said. Snow particles actually hit the ground, creating layers. Water looks wonderful. No game has ever done these things before, and it makes me proud it's Skyrim. It's a new foothold in Gaming. I would not doubt that there would be seasons.

good idea, like the year cycle is different in skyrim than the rest of tamriel, it makes sense because its the northern most province and days could be longer or shorter depending on the time of year. and its a frikin fantasy world..screw it.

Yeah, that could be a solution to time issues. Or something similar.
If Bethesda are going to add seasons, which I truly truly hope, I'm sure they'll come up with something so that everyone can experience a few years through the gameplay time.
