It's actually quite easy to implement seasons. The game detects what month it is, then uses a probability calculator geared towards one side depending on the season, and then boom, seasons. Of course I don't know the game's programming but that's the easiest way I could think of. Of course frozen water and tree coloring would have scripts running day and night, detecting months, days, and even changing the water programming. So yeah...seasons are cool and all, but the best they can do would be only weather without causing severe lag or requiring ridiculous computer requirements.
