Security or Resistance - Does it really matter?

Post » Sat Jan 01, 2011 1:33 am

Was just looking through some fan-forums and I see a lot of Security or Resistance threads and I wonder, does it matter?
I mean, in multiplayer, you can't really choose what side you're gonna be, it just depends on the amount of people in each team.
What do you guys think?

It's more about personal preference, politics and morals, and nothing really about gameplay.

This is a deeper issue than clothing and appearance for some, but a lot of the audience is younger, being a T-rated game, and some people may just pick sides for the outfits.

I happen to like Security Uniforms AND Resistance Gear, but the fact is that one side appeals to me more in their belief system, values, and appearance overall.

preference

it isn't going to make any real objective difference on terms of skill or gameplay, if anything it cosmetic...

Actually you will play whichever faction you choose. Bots will fill in any imbalances.

For actual gaming it won't matter. For forums and mindsets it does.

You don't pick the TF141 in CoD either because you dislike teh communisd russhunz either, do you?

I like both sides, but I prefer Security.

And as mentioned, you CAN choose which side to play, so yeah, if you have a preference, it does actually count.

Have they confirmed if you can say "The one with less players" for your Faction choice?

The attacking and defending teams depends on which mission you're playing.

The people who form the Resistance have pretty much invaded the Ark, yes.

In Container City, Security is offense and Resistance defense.

I find it difficult to believe that Splash Damage just has "Faction 1 is offense, Faction 2 is defense" like in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars or Halo: Reach. Both teams will have objectives. If there was solely offense vs defense per level, the attacking side would get a ton of XP for scoring the primary objectives (blowing up the door, repairing the crane, etc in Container City) while the defense would have to deal with secondary objectives (capturing Command Posts, buffing allies, etc) and not get as much XP for that. I am hoping Brink is similar to Invasion, but instead of one side being dedicated offense and the other dedicated defense, both sides will have primary objectives to attack and defend. If I am right, Brink's missions will be a race to see who can complete their primary objectives first, which forces the team to balance their offensive and defensive capacities.

That's my hope anyway.

I think in a sense it does matter - To you as the player..

As mentioned, Its a matter off personal choice (Where does your morals lie?)

Its not so much a case of "Wow im going resistance cause they look kick ass!"

Theres obviously storys behind both factions- and until we play the game and find out what them stories are, Then i think both sides will have there good & bad reasons as to why there doing what there doing.

Both sides are the exact same except for looks such as clothing, guns, etc.

What side you are on may dictate what objectives you get because from what we have seen you are either on the defensive or offensive side, and what side you are on depends on what faction your with, certain maps a faction is always on defensive/offensive.

People also choose factions for their looks, morals, or just cause they think their cool, i personally perfer the security, i love the clean look they have.

The story behind both sides is also a reason to choose them, im playing through both sides of the story, at least once, both sides have diffrent storys i belive, as the resistance blows up in the resistance campagin, but in the security campagin the secruity takes over and the resistance cannot blow up .

It does affect the gameplay in the sense of the types of missions you'll do, I'd say. If you play the same stage you played as security, you aren't doing the same things as resistance.

Whatever faction you choose first, that's the side you're going to be n. If you choose you wanna be Resistance first, you'll be Resistance, then the game will autobalance the teams if they're not even close to being equal.

I think you'll be disappointed then. To use an example, on Container City Security is exclusively offense for the duration of the mission and Resistance is exclusively defense. Other missions will probably function in a similar manner, just in some cases the roles will be reversed. Plus, having defensive and offensive objectives to manage would simply be too taxing on an eight player team - especially in public matches.

I don't see that as a problem though - sure the attacking team gets a large amount of XP for completing the objectives, but the defending team gets a large amount for defending them. I'm sure it'll even out - or the defenders may even average more than the attackers.

Well yes and no. Attackers will have primary objectives and the defenders primary objectives is to stop the attacker primary objective. There will be lots of secondary missions: capturing CP's, hacking side doors etc that both side can do or cancel to gain advantage.

I'm aware, but the post I quoted specifically said he was worried about defenders only getting XP from these secondary objectives. So I didn't bother mentioning them. I've done my homework. :P

I was referring to how Otter said he hoped Brink would have primary offensive objectives for both sides, something I'm pretty sure Brink won't have. Because having to worry about attacking, defending, AND secondary objectives all at the same time is just too much for eight players to deal with.

Agreed on the primary objective, for example once the Security blows open the door on CC the Resistance can't reclose it.

It would be too much. That was one of the problems with Section 8 there were 2 many objectives going on at once.
