See texture being edited on mesh in real time... Possible?

By FAR the most frustrating thing about making new textures is... Having to make many countless textures, sometimes close to or above 100 total, of trial and error trying to fit it perfectly over a mesh. Each time a DDS needs to be manually converted to a PNG and vice versa, then over time copies build up making it take longer and longer and THEN I need to manually either add the new texture in question via nifskope or the Creation Kit to see it, and I never know if it fits perfectly ahead of time.

I know not... Directly creation kit related, but it's about trying to more efficiently make textures on Skyrim models... If that's possible.

I've STILL managed to make a few retextures none the less, but it's quite frustrating, and the thing I'm wondering is, is this just the way it is, or is there something I don't know?
