Seeing Breath

Post » Thu Feb 24, 2011 8:03 pm

I was outside in the cold yesterday taking care of my horses, and I noticed the big billowing clouds of breath that were visible in the air everytime they exhaled. It occured to me that this would be a really nice little detail to add to the game. Parts of Skyrim appear to be very cold indeed, and while it might be a bit much to give every NPC (including the player) visible breath in cold locations, it'd be really cool if the big, hulking mamoths, giants and other large creatures had visible clouds of breath in certain regions.

Cool detail, but maybe not the player. I think it would just get annoying.

Maybe not all the time with the player. How about after a long run, or in a few other key instances.

This is a great idea and combine with the hardcoe way, can you imagine, you're riding without a proper clothing during a snowstorm, then your breath begins to get stronger, you begin to see the cold air out of your respiration, then you should seek a warm place, or start a fire (releasing a fire spell?) to keep warm.

It could show your breath when you are in third-person, but first-person, bad idea.

Well I've been a smoker for 25 years or so, and smoke in 1st person never bothered me ;) Coupling it to fatigue (breathing heavily) and coldness seems like the best approach for me. Maybe barely visible in 1st person. Sounds cool.

Hehe.

I don't see why not. I remember having a discussion in the community thread suggesting these kind of things that make a world feel massive and alive and enhance the feeling you're actually looking through the eyes of a person that's wandering around in it. Good you noted this.

Seems like good idea, but can probably be a pain in the ass if used in 1st-person.

Also, I love your Azrael avatar. :P

I wouldn't doubt the possibility of the feature being in there. Some of the newer games I've played has such an effect when the character is engrossed in such a climate.

Third person yes but first person would just become a nuisance.

I think it was the latest Medal of Honor that did this, with icy breath in first person when you got too cold, and it worked REALLY well. Would be great if there is indeed a hypothermia mechanic in the game for colder, higher regions.

Also, with the whole Dragon Shout thing being represented on the wall as breath from the Dragonborne's mouth, this could connect to that as well!

I agree.
After a long run in the cold. Subtle.
Both 1st and 3rd person.

It would add a nice little touch. Though, I would make it only happen in cold regions after the character has used "sprint" and/or is low on stamina.

Definitely yes. As for the player, i say you could only see it in 3rd person view, so i doesn't bother you all the time.

More likely it would be cool at first. Then you would completely forget about it.

for the player when you run out of stamina it would be a very good idea other than that people usualy breath with their nose so the steam would go downward and we wouldnt see it
