Seeing more besides hands

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 9:07 pm

It's always bugged me that so many games set in first person do not show anything other than you're hands and maybe arms. When i look down i really want to see my body, legs, and the movements associated with them. I'm so tired of this "bodiless head" that floats around that represents first person view mode.

Indeed, hopefully we don't also glide alone the ground and actually take steps this time!

iirc, in the Halo games if you looked down you could see your legs. If Skyrim was atleast like that, i'd be one happy khajiit.

Indeed, I would also like to stay in 1st person when you get paralyzed or knocked down, with the camera actually facing where your head is turned. That would be terrifying.

Looking over at my collection of games and the only games I see that are in first-person where you do not see your lower body are Elder Scrolls III, IV, Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Bethesda are finally catching up to everyone else in the animation department. I can only hope they catch up in the view department now...

This is one of those things they should add during the next 9 months.

It looks to me like they still are not quite able to make sure the feet touch the ground:

So, maybe when that happens. Until then, I don't mind if they are missing. I'd rather have missing than obviously wrong.

that would great to stay in first person as you fall down the mountain paralyzed, rather terryfying but at least you get a nice few of the rocks

Not seeing my legs never bothered me. I never even thought about it.
I can only speculate way: perhaps I am too old and have played so many older games that I have gotten used to the "floating head" view.

I'm going to try expanding on this a bit. I want to see how they handle combat "perks" in first person. In Oblivion, and I think Fallout 3, if your melee combat required your character to do a spinning effect, the attack would appear different in the first person view. We've seen a "swirly" attack in the Skyrim trailer, and I'm quite sure the first person attack is going to have an altered effect also. Pity.

I don't want it, because it usually looks clunky and awkward. No thanks. The "bodiless head" as you put it is all that I want / expect.

I prefer no body in first person personally because it doesn't add anything for me. It somehow only makes games less immersive to me usually, although I can't explain why.

I bet you can't, as that makes absolutely no sense lol. Look down, your argument just spun into the Pacific Ocean. But to each his own.

It's because the game do the job of your imagination, and usually, it does it bad.
Except mirror's edge, all the game where I could see my legs disappointed me, because of the animations.
Take Oblivion for example, when the 1st person body mod appeared, I downloaded it right away. Then I played...
It just didn't felt good at all. When I was climbing a mountain, I use to imagine my character, well, actually climb. I could pictures his hands grabbing rocks, his feet finding good places etc.
When I could see my legs, it was just the standard walking animation working. That just looked horrible.
What was meant to emphasize immersion actually broke it totally.

So if I see my legs, i hope for REALLY credible animations. If not, please let my imagination do the work.

I think that if it was done, it would have good visuals associated with it, but i agree that if it isn't done well- i'd prefer not to have it in. I think it should also be toggle-able for those who wouldn't want it in. Or at least add the possibility via moders, they add everything to anything possible.

Yep, you could see your legs in Halo.

I never even noticed it until people here started howling about how seeing your legs was an absolute must, which I suppose just shows how important I find it to be.

Don't really care if it's in or not myself- based on other games it'd be relevant for 30 seconds after I notice it then go back to "don't even notice" as I pay attention to what I'm doing instead of examining the front of my trousers.

Personally, I don't think this matters at all! I'd rather they spent their time on more important things, like polishing!!
