Seeing your own body in 1st person

Post » Fri Feb 18, 2011 7:57 pm

One thing in many games I always notice is that I always seem to be closer to the ground than my height would indicate. This always kinda distracts from the immersion.
And while I doubt it would be all too easy to impliment, I'd love to just see my body. I think this would do great in removing that feeling.
I want to look down and see my torso, my legs and feet, I want to see my arms swinging slightly when I look to the side, or heavily when I'm running.
This would do a whole lot when it comes down to immersion and would surely make the game a million times better.

yah I want to see my body cause I wanna play with it...

OK that came out way too wrong :blush2:

it would add 1000% immersion if your not an invisible floating ball that hits stuff.

There is already a thread about this.

I would love it,but chicks would hate to see their own cleavage in first person.

You should make a poll out of this :P

Torso is a maybe for me (not really necessary in my opinion).
But I definitely want to see my legs. I want to see my arms. Especially when you're swimming, running or falling from a height.

Mirror's edge did this awesomely. Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIqHiTBhDoo

I don't wanna be a floating camera with a sword in front of it. And given the fact that the 1st person view hasn't changed since Morrowind or so, I think it's time for something new - something like Mirror's edge :)

I agree.

The reason for what you are describing is not because you can't see your body, it's because of the difficulties of scaling versus in-game camera-size and location. (This is why in last-gen shooters if you ever went into 3rd person it would looking like there were bullets coming out of your head). You can see this in Oblivion too...run around in first person and everything looks to scale, but switch to 3rd and you seem tiny compared to what you thought was a normal sized tree.

Hopefully, there are workarounds for this now.

LOL

Add in some great boob physics, and it'd be even an better sell to the teenage boys
Reminds me of the time LInk Hogthrob and Miss Piggy switched bodies on The Muppet Show

Really, it doesn't make any difference to me whether I see my body or not. Well, maybe, as there's only so much screen area in which everything must fit. I THINK one's vision has a greater field of view than the screen

Simple solution: don't show cleavage to begin with.

Left 4 Dead is a good example of this. It would be nice to look down and see ones lower-body.

Ok, I turned it into a poll.

Also, sorry about the thread already existing. I didn't do a search.

On the cleavage issue, someone summed it up perfectly in another thread. Women deal with it normally anyway, so it's no different. Also, if they have the option for big boobs and you want a busty character, that's going to have certain ramifications that should be expected. Otherwise, have small boobs and not worry. Also, most of the time they would be covered by armour/clothing anyway.

So basically, you get what you pay for. Want a nice big pair? Then you'll see them.

If they don't have options, they won't make the boobs obtrusive.

I don't like the idea of boobs being visible at all. The Elder Scrolls has done a great job of not objectifying women and forcing six down the players throat, but having boobs being visible when you look down on a female character would be kind of ridiculous. I can already imagine the millions of mods that make giant boobs just so the player can look down at them. It's a little much.

In Oblivion there are shemale mods, huge boob mods, six mods, etc etc. Some players will like it, other's wouldn't. And there will always be a large gathering of insane sixual mods anyway.
I wouldn't mind seeing cleavage. Not for "omfg bewbies" but just for the realism.

The basic sized boobs for Oblivion are barely noticeable anyway. I don't see how it is forcing six down anyone's throat. I mean so long as they're small they probably wouldn't even be visible (like in Mirror's Edge) and even if they are, it's just a part of female anatomy. Should we also stop having hunky males? What if people look at the guys chest!? The briast bumps in armour are far more objectifying and unlike this idea, also unrealistic. Mods will do perverted things no matter how much you limit them. That's no argument. The advantages of a visible body far outweigh the supposed objectification issue.

I know, but still, having boobs be visible when one looks down seems like there's no reason for that to happen other than eye candy.

I also can't really imagine how one would see their chest as a male character if they looked down while also seeing their legs. From a perspective point, I think it would make more sense to just have the lower body visible as most first-person games with this feature have done.

It's like if we would see our noses as well and our hair and have helmet vision.

Seeing legs, shoulders and arms is enough for me to be happy :)

For a female you can see your nice curves, or simply big boobs if one prefers that. (if there's a slider for that, I'd prefer just nice small ones as it would look better)
For males, they could see their muscular torso.
Besides, usually it would be covered up by armour anyway, and you will simply see the shape of the armour you're wearing, forming to the contours of your body.

Mirror's Edge had the body visible, but because the briasts were not large, they didn't really get visible at any point. The camera was just far enough forward so it still seemed realistic but also no briasts.

And while the briasts inparticular isn't any advantage other than eye-candy, the idea of having a viewable body really adds to immersion and realism (don't want my footprints appearing out of nowhere or to feel like a floating head) and could also help things when you are walking on a thin ledge or similar.

The way I see it, if I play a female character, look down and see my boobs are suddenly missing it would be highly odd. Or excluding the whole torso would still be a bit weird, like you only have legs/feet and arms.

How would that work? Your shoulders just dissapear as they get to the torso? You need to have the camera further forward if you want the body non-visible (in which case, shoulders wouldn't be either). Otherwise, you'd just have legs coming out of nowhere.

Most games just remove your entire body, I would be happy if we got what Halo:Reach got. Legs.
