I can't tell if Pete's comment was sarcasm or not. I assume it was, but he didn't further comment on the topic, which means nothing but stated for the record, that and the direction of Skyrim's combat seems to suggest a more serious system. Hand to hand shouldn't work in a battle against a dragon. I personally don't mind if it's not a skill. Hand to hand should be limited to bar fights, store owners defending their stores, etc. Fisted combat will likely be in, but I have a doubt they'll add it as a skill or a fighting style against dragons or fierce foes.
With that said they should still overhaul the system. It should rely on stamina again as in Morrowind. But behave in a more realistic way. Study boxing and mma and how even when a fighter seems to be out, they recover and are able to put on a good show. So it shouldn't just be a downhill battle. They need a recovery system in place as well as the 1-3 hit knockouts. Maybe even have differences between jab/cross(button tap) or haymaker(button held) Jab would be more technical and take more shots but be safer. And haymaker which leaves you exposed but could end the fight if the opponent isn't blocking. Maybe even add liver shots into the mix, when a person is blocking, the liver is exposed and a nice hook(or jab due to limitations) would possibly take them down. They could even do different punch techniques by using the direction buttons. Left/right+attack = hook. Forward+attack = superman punch. Backwards+attack = fleeing jab lol Many possibilities.
