Peple connect Redguards to real life african americans(or other african ethnic group.) all the time.. but why? I mean I know they look similar but that doesn't mean they are similar. For example, I have read on the internet that a lot of people get "turned off" of playing red guards because they are considered the "black" race.. even though they are just another race of human in the TES world right? Anyway, it just seems a lot of people dislike Redguards. but why is that? I personally like Redguards a lot, but it could be because I am african american.. I don't know. I also like orcs a lot though.. so I think it is just a matter of preference. However what is interesting is.. a lot of people like dark elves who have DARK skin.. like darker than redguards skin.. yet people love dunmer? Why? is it because the dunmer basically have no connection to a real life race? What do you guys think?

I agree. Except Dunmer do not have as dark of skin than Redguards. And honestly, as a side note.. the name Redguards has to be the dumbest race name. The rest are pretty cool.

You know, OP, black people complaining about racism they've imagined is very racist. Be the change you want to see, or is it just more fun and more convenient to play the race card? :(

I don't play redguards because I don't play fantasy games to play as a human.

The only reason I avoid Redgaurds is I tend to focus on magic.

Redguards are great, but I'm more interested in orcs for my melee playthrough. Mostly because I avoided orcs in all previous TES games and they finally made orcs that don't look completely ridiculous.

Because they are probably the race I connect with the least because i'm not black, and also they are just ordinary humans and seem to be black imperials but with a better race ability and they aren't imperial. They're culture/history doesn't interest me much either.

There have been alot of overtly racist threads about redguards. Maybe you missed it because they got locked pretty quickly.

I think the male Redguard presets look pretty cool. Once I do my Dunmer and Breton playthroughs, I'm probably going for a Redguard for my third run.

Has anyone noticed the overabundance of. "I love Redguards...my best friend is a Redguard" type statements in this thread? Haha....its just somewhat amuzing to me. In a good natured way of course.

I play an orc... because no one's an orc in real life. Unless you're so hideous that you make birds die while in midair. I don't think anyone can really be that ugly, except an orc.

I just go with what I know...I've always played Nord...I love the barbarian/viking 'feel' of them...Plus, besides the Altmer...They're the tallest race in the game...

Basing a race of aesthetics is simply stupid. The whole idea that Redguard's are just the black /African American guys of Tamriel is absolutely ignorant and has no foundation save for skin color. If your going to pass judgment you should at least take the time to do a little research before doing so.

Ha! you mean being able to use your soul as a sword thats capable of spliting atoms isn't distinct or edgy? read the lore friend.

I'm sure he meant you know... in game. They really should give them more distinctive bonuses.

Edit: P.S. I'll be in hell before I admit that the arrogant Altmer have a better navy than the Redguards.

I enjoy playing my Redgaurd. Yeah, I'm black, but it really didn't effect my choice...
Redgaurds are pretty much warriors, so I guess alot of people rooting for magic and stealth might not like them.

One of my playthroughs is going to be a mage redguard

Redguards are the most awesome race in TES. Their greatest warriors, the Ansei, become one with the sword to such an extent that they can form a sword from pure spirit energy - in some cases so powerful they become legendary for their destructive force.

Some of the more fanciful legends claim that Yokuda (The original home of the Redguards) was destroyed by such spirit swords.

I like Redgaurds, I actually think they are really cool, sure I am not black skin but I have played them which my main races are Breton and Dark Elf, I played Redgaurds because they are nice and cool, I did change their skin to yellowish/white because that is my skin but I still like them.

I don't understand why people keep going back to them being black...

I want to talk about their history and culture. You know, things that actually matter in the game? Not about what color their skin is. It's dark, big [censored] deal. All this thread shows me is that most are ignorant of Redguard lore...

I like Redguards, one of my best friends is a Redguard!!!

Seriously though, I know what you are saying, but at least you have some in-game facsimile of your ethnicity.

In Oblivion the races were:

  • Altmer - High Elf
  • Argonian - Reptilian Humanoid
  • Bosmer - Wood Elf
  • Breton - Similarities to Citizens of the English/British Empire
  • Dunmer - Dark Elf
  • Imperial - Similarities to Citizens of the Roman Empire
  • Khajiit - Large Cat Humanoid
  • Nord - Similarities to Viking/Nordic Race
  • Orc - Self Explanatory
  • Redguard - Similarities to Black/African Race

Sadly, there's no game-world equivalent to my ethnicity, which is Asian, though I was able to customize an Imperial look somewhat like me in Oblivion. I imagine the list of playable races will be exactly the same for Skyrim.

Yeah no, if they are similar to anyone it would be the Ottomans or other Middle Eastern countries with large navies.

It may be 'stupid' but it happens in games and happens in real life. You can call it racism, narrow mindedness, or whatever. At the end of the day there's a lot of people claiming they like Redguards and have no problem playing as one, but when they do play the game, they don't choose Redguard. There's no point in doing research. Regardless of how many hours are dedicated to researching on a race in a game or real life, people WILL pass judgement based on aesthetics and there is NOTHING you can do about it. Get over it already. That's how the human brain works.
