Selective energy weapon lag...

Alright, I'm guessing this is probably because I'm only running an i3 processor...but certain energy weapons, say the pulse gun, the OWB robo-scorpion blast, and the OWB sonic emitter, will temporarily pause my game. I was wondering if this was a known issue; say, if those effects were more processor hungry? Usually besides these my game speed is a-okay. I'm also running a fair share of mods. Not asking for a full diagnosis of the problem; just asking if it's either a common problem or if they truly are processor hogs.
