No self shadowing...

Post » Tue Aug 31, 2010 10:05 pm

If you take a look at the screenshots, there appears to be a lack of self-shadowing. I know the PC version of Oblivion has self-shadowing. I'm thinking the screens are from the console versions.

The game isn't finished yet. It is possible that shadows are something they are still working on

There's also not really a screen that is in a position to show the character's shadow if it were there, is it?

Is that really that important? Also, there are still 10 months of development.

I'm pretty sure they mentioned it somewhere in the article.

Also, why wouldn't they show off the console version first? After all, that's their primary market with the game, so why show the game at max settings knowing the majority of players won't ever get visuals as good as the previews?

It's basically the same marketing technique as Fallout 3, as all screenshots released by Bethesda for that game came directly from the Xbox 360 version.

I'm not seeing that at all.

The bright flare caused by casting a spell causes the back of the character's hand to darken with shadow. The zombie-skeletons appear crammed with self-shadowing. The giant holds a wodden club over his shoulder, with both the club and his arm casting a shadow down over his chest and side. The under arm of the dude with a bare back...

Well I haven't actually seen the GI, only the scans, and from what I've seen it's all to blurry to tell the difference.

From the screens, it looks like it's definitely in the game. I honestly don't know how someone could look at those shots and doubt it...

If it's anything like Oblivion's self shadowing, then count me out, as that technique was horrid.

Now, what I'd really love to see in Skyrim is SSAO (Screen Space Ambient Occlusion) or at least AO in general.

Are we talking about soft shadows in general? Todd confirmed in the article that every object in the world will have a dynamic soft shadow, and this can clearly be seen in the picture with the guy fighting the spider. The spider's leg casts a nice shadow on the wall behind it.

The self shadowing in Oblivion looked like crap. If they can't do it right it's better they don't do it at all.

Look at the picture when you get the magazine of the forest giant. Absolute self shadowed. Proof? 11 months and we'll see.

Yes. Exactly what it says and yes it matters if you care what things look like. And self shadows are plainly visible in the screenies.
