Semi-transparent square grid when looking at grass

Post » Wed Aug 07, 2013 6:11 am

When looking at grass and plants, it's as though there's an almost transparent square grid in front of them (as though my character was wearing contact lenses with small squares on them). It's hard to see in a screenshot, but it's VERY visible when looking around. You can probably make out some of the lines here:

Do you have any insight on what might be causing this? I've installed a number of mods related to grass & plants, as recommended by RealVision ENB, such as "Skyrim Flora Overhaul", "Lush Trees and Grass", and "Grass On Steroids".

I've made these changes to Skyrim.ini (due to instructions from two of the mods):

- iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure=6
- iMinGrassSize=40

Any ideas?

Thanks for your time. []

It might be because the grass is more 2D than 3D. If I look at it from the right, or wrong if you will, angle, I see what your describing, only it is the 2D structure used to define a 3D looking grass.

Have you played around with AA (FXAA) and AF to see if those settings reduce the effect.

Thanks, though it occurs no matter which direction I observe it from, and it's a very "in your face" kind of thing that's radically distracting, even though that's hard to project with a screenshot. Something is definitely awry. It's never been like this before. I believe those three mods are the only relevant ones I've installed since the last time everything was fine.

Since the grass is really an + when viewed from the top, the best viewing angle only occurs at 4 cardinal points on the arc. I have noticed that mods that increase the grass detail tend to make this worse.

Personally, I don't look at the grass, I usually find a mod that even shortens it so it's not in my way (for looting purposes)

The only thing you can do is remove those mods and then add them back one at a time until you notice the problem (which was there the whole time, you just could not see it)

Maybe related to your shadow setting? DId you activate shadows on grass?

Aha! The mod "Lush Trees and Grass" recommended that I set "bShadowsOnGrass=0", but once I switched back to "bShadowsOnGrass=1" the problem resolved itself.

Many thanks. :)
