Semper Cognatio - Brink Update & Info

Post » Sat Mar 27, 2010 5:41 am

Semper Cognatio have published an update on Brink from gathering information from the community, Q&A's and interviews:

Splash damage has recently broken the rather extended and eerily silent lack of news regarding their Spring FPS release, Brink. With varying community driven interviews and Q&A Sessions, much more information has come to light regarding some of the particular details surrounding the highly anticipated title. The information was given by Lead Creative Director Richard Ham and Lead Game Designer Neil Alphonso

Most notably, more information has been spilled regarding the gametypes involved and how they tie into the over-arching “Narrative” themed multiplayer.

Here's a few paragraphs from the article:

It would appear that the floods of heaven have opened up to the PC gaming community. To think, a developer with any form of plans or support for the underdog of the gaming platforms exists! We anxiously look forward to further news and updates concerning the SDK and modding tools/support to be available.

While most notably, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 had varying issues and problems for the PC platform, no one could deny that it was easily competitive with great focus towards small and medium sized teams to be able to compete and cooperate easily across the board. It would seem that Splash Damage is aiming for much the same goals with Brink, dedicating the game to being able to be played with varying amounts of teammates on each team.

“We’re planning on including options to play Brink with less than eight players on a team. We’re mindful of the fact that competitive gaming gets more difficult from an organizational standpoint with team sizes greater than six, and we’re happy to say that Brink still plays great with fewer combatants as long as there’s good teamwork.”

Along with this, Splash Damage has given even more assurance that they plan to further interact with and propel the competitive gaming community with the Brink release.

“We’ve always enjoyed supporting all manner of community events, including online and LAN tournaments (some of you might remember that we even participated in an Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars exhibition match against Team Dignitas at Multiplay’s i-series!). We can’t wait to continue that with Brink, and Bethesda will be our partner in these efforts.”

Going along with the above info, Splash Damage assures,

“The release of a Beta for Brink is something that is still being discussed, but no decision has been made one way or the other at this stage. At the very least, we’ll be doing a ‘family and friends’ closed Beta with Bethesda and id.

However, exploits and bugs are potential problems we’re very conscious of, and we approach some of our in-house testing with this specifically in mind. Anything goes in our playtests, so if anything is a candidate for abuse, it gets noticed fairly quickly. We also have a full time production testing team here at the office, paying special attention to exploits and griefing opportunities.”

Obviously, it seems there is some sort of public closed beta for PS3, now.

in our current play-testing setup it takes around half a clip to take down an enemy if they’re not evading

So i guess that means average ammo used to get a takedown, i.e in reality it would be like 8 shots?
Hard to say :X

It depends on the place you aim. If it's a bit like their previous game, you can take out anyone on short range with 4-5 shots (Missed shots inclusive). 3-4 of these shots then have to be headshots.
Anyway, it's unclear at this point how it's going to work out in Brink. Let's hope someone is brave enough to leak :foodndrink:

lmao, and get sued? Nah, no ones gonna do that, not in their right mind. Why would they put themselves in danger when they get to play the game anyway?

Heh i've signed many NDA's over the years, and broken a few (never go out drinking after a day of playing on a beta). What we need is a massive outcry along the lines of 'WTF no PC/X360 beta, not buying it now!!!!'

I would, but I already paid for it, so I'm not sure how effective that will be. Really though, beta is for testing, and apparently PS3 is the one that needs the most help. At the same time they will be looking to make changes that affect all 3 platforms, so doing another beta on those platforms would be less effective afterward.

Even if they do have a beta for the other two consoles, there's a very large chance that the people complaining wont get in. Add to that fact that they are probably going to continue keeping any betas within EU, where they have a legal reach, and it becomes completely irrelevant to North American gamers.

Besides, most of the complaining isn't being done because the followers want more testing, people just want to play the game early. Anyone with that motive isn't likely to avoid buying the game to make a point.

Yeah, as someone who knows how to write a bug report I'd happily test (been checking my inbox) even if the PS3 needs the most help (its is by far the hardest console to code for), testing on many platforms is more useful, even with something like consoles as you never know how the game will react to the many net connections out there, then there is the modded ones (my X360 doesn't even look like one anymore) you can never have enough testing.

Also the public always seems to think of things that paid testers don't.

The Truth ^^
Still, a widespread beta will be detrimental to the game in my opinion. As much as i'd like to play it, people think that an open beta is a finished product...if there was to be a public beta, keys would have to be limited and given to people that are more concerned with helping the game, and then you give early access to those who preordered it if things are looking good.
The order of which people who should receive keys imho are invited professional organizations for balancing and basic server functionality etc, then invite community members and close it a few weeks later, if most found issues are fixed that are game breaking, give early access to those who preorder it. Even if it was just single player early access, it would influence people to buy it.
