So... Sentient Items...

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 2:43 am

I wouldn't mind to have one or two sentient items in the game. I was actually quite fond of the Stealth suit. So, if they would put in something like that, it'd be fine with me.

Some can be funny at times. Others are just annoying.

In EverQuest there is a mask made from the skull of a werewolf. It would offer some very humorous tidbits every now and then. For instance, if a party member is killed in combat, one of the things it might say would be, "Don't morn the loss of your friend. He was only slowing down the pack."

But that Stealth Suit that is available in Big MT, it is like being trapped in a closet with a valley girl on a sugar jag.

THAT'S WHAT FALLOUT 4 NEEDS: Valley Supermutants. I can just hear their battle cry... "EWWW, GAG ME WITH A NAIL BOARD"

Any sentient item will become annoying. There are a limited number of lines they can possibly record, so they're very repetitious. Also, every sentient I've seen (mods included) - that I remember at least - really just highlight stuff the UI is already telling you, making them also redundant.

The cyberdog gun is alright I suppose - using sounds effects rather than actual dialogue makes its limited soundboard less grating in the long term and it's a good flavour item. However the 'voice' is really only good for a guilt trip if you don't 'feed' it the right bullets or you dare to swap to another weapon.

honestly to me any potential for practicality of having a talking piece of armor is not the appeal, I just like having them for role playing reasons.

. I can see it now....

Does this holster make me look fat?
Your always loading hollow points, are you trying to tell me something?
Armor piercing AGAIN???
Hun, don't feel sad, lots of people have weapons smarter than they are.
Try holding the gun sideways....
You know I can also be used as to scratch itchy ears and to remove earwax . . .

Omg, the horrors :D

I enjoyed the stealth armor, but I only used it for a while then got tired of it. I guess it looked kind of cool, but not something my characters would actually wear unless required.

In FO4? I don't know. It's been done now and wouldn't be new and unique, Besides, given their previous writing skills, I doubt they could improve it. On/off switch would definitely be required.

No, talking items are a cool novelty at first, but they get annoying really fast. Lilarcor in Baldur's Gate II was hilarious until you got tired of hearing "Yoink! Got your nose!" - which didn't take long.

I enjoyed the proactive ai of the medic armor, it helped in combat and otherwise left me alone.
The stealth armor had sweet buffs, but I'd avoid it because it kept trying to bug me.
So a pacifistic sword or gun waxing poetic wouldn't be welcome, but a gun telling me that my target was out of range or that I had hostiles on my flank would be handy.
