Sentimentality

Post » Mon May 02, 2011 11:37 pm

We all know sentimentality. That attachment we get to old, positive emotions, which causes us to glorify them and twist our own realities.

One thing you notice... is that certain people need to glorify their past experiences... they see new games as an opportunity to revisit past glories and when they are refused that... they take it as an affront.

There certainly is room for us to criticize new things... in new games that we anticipate... but if we try to hold a new game up to an old sentimental standard (A standard which is not, as much as I loved Morrowind, marketable)... are we not doomed to be left behind in bitterness?

Let's try not to revisit old glories... and instead... anticipate glories to come.

Everything. People are so concerned with BGS maintaining the status quo of previous TES titles, that they are stubborn and close-minded to new ideas. They fear the game is being "dumbed down" because we are losing skills, losing attributes, losing birth signs, etc.

Instead of being so against change and any new idea BGS brings to the table, take a step back and actually let the game speak for itself when you play it. If you don't like the new direction, these forums will always be here, and BGS is more than capable of making changes and tweaks for the next installment of Fallout and TES.

Right but what does that have to do with skyrim specifically? I am all for the game speaking for it self but this thread isn't about Skyrim

Exactly. And TES wouldn't be what it is today if it didn't take a few risks back then, so why is it suddenly wrong to take risks?

I'm thinking of two kinds of sentimentality. I will never forget the first time I ever went into an Oblivion Gate in Kvatch. I was so scared to death and when I did what had to be done, I felt a great sense of relief and accomplishment. That happened for that entire first game. Playing my 4th game now and there's no fear at all. It's still fun, but that feeling can't come back. Then there was a quest in FO3 where I had to get through what felt like a thousand mutants in a hospital and then cross over a bridge to a hotel and reach the top to save Reilly's Rangers. It was horrendous...but I made it. I'll have those great memories forever and yes, I'm sentimental about them. What I'm looking forward to now, based on these recent interviews with Todd Howard, is how it's going to be the first time I fight a Dragon. :o I'm already scared and it's going to be really something. I just hope it's just one the first time. I recently watched that movie, Reign of Fire with Christian Bale and dragons are scary!

As far as attributes and skills and all that, I'm completely open to any changes they felt were necessary and will judge all of that after I play Skyrim. It's fine by me...I'll do what I need to do as always...bring it on! :D

It's really too bad that people couldn't really grasp the attribute system and they had to remove it.

Agreed, and well said. Morrowind was an amazing game. Oblivion was..well Oblivion was there for us to play. :)
But Skyrim, the sky is the limit, and we should be looking forward to new adventures in this new world for us to explore, not ways to rehash our old experiences.

Not to mention they're adding more to the adventure and the player's imagination by taking away attributes? How strong am I? Well I don't know. I can kill people in a matter of seconds, but the game won't give me a number from 1-100.

As for the central point of this topic, I loved Morrowind more than any game and I'd give anything to be able to blank my memory of the game and go into it blind again, just because I know everything about it and no other games have given me that feeling of adventure and triumph. I let that hold me back from liking Oblivion, only because of it's predecessor. I'm trying very hard to not let that ruin Skyrim for me. Rather than thinking back to what was great about a game that came out years ago, I'm thinking about how the features of Skyrim will allow me to enjoy my upcoming adventures. And I'm liking everything I see so far.

I agree. Change can be good or bad, but in this case, it's a good thing. If Bethesda didn't try new things now and then, they'd might as well repackage their previous game and change the title.

Sentimental attachment to TES III almost ruined TES IV for me. I was very glad when I opened my eyes... I realized that sentimental attachment asked the impossible of oblivion, and I forced myself to see Oblivion as it's own entity.

It helped me enjoy Oblivion... which... against my initial judgments... turned out to be a rich and enjoyable game... maybe with a few flaws (But who is going to say TES III was immaculate?)

So what does this have to do with TES V... well... just about everything. Everyone here on these boards has some sentimental attachment to a previous TES title and that is what this thread is about... and I don't doubt that you all love those titles any less than I loved Morrowind.

And I am not asking anyone to remove their sentimentality. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing. I have... countless memories of Morrowind that I never want to lose. What I mean to say... is that we ought to see our sentimentality for what it is... and remove any detrimental influence that sentimentality will exert upon this new game, Skyrim... so it can be judged on its own merits.

No classes... reduced skills... no birthsigns... and no attributes? What are they thinking?

Oh yeah, they're thinking of ways to make a better RPG experience without arbitrarily clinging onto old elements just because of tradition. I think a lot of people forget that the devs, unlike us, have actually played the game already. Every change they make has a reason. They don't get rid of things just to make us upset; they change things to make a better game.

You gotta break a few eggs to make an omlette. Some changes are gonna make people mad, and possibly not like the game as much. Consider the change from dice roll combat to Oblivion's combat, some people just really love the dice-roll combat, and nothing is going to change that.

I think getting rid of attributes, and athletics and acrobatics is just moving forward... lets just hope they do it right.

:lmao:

I can only laugh at the collection of individuals here harping on the thoughts of others, calling people close minded and resistant to change as if either or are inherently bad or good traits, Both sides have given sweeping arguments as to why and why not, its only the people with the "blinders" on as one forum used as an insult who think the other is at fault for thinking a certain way. since when is moving forward instantly a good thing? Do you drive into your house if your car rear is facing the street when your trying to leave?

Its not Nostalgia if people are still playing games of the past to this day, its not like they can't compare games and see "oh **** something isnt adding up here" and this whole attribute thing is NOTHING new, we saw this coming in the beginning of this year, its only now being confirmed....

get the hell over yourselves and stop posting irrelevant topics in the Skyrim section to feel good about yourselves you want to chat and demonize a certain group go do it in the Comm discussion frankly Im tired of people with Seperation syndrom as if one TES fan is lesser than another, in case you didnt notice every TES game is preceeded by TES there is no such thing as Morrowind fans or Oblivion fans, and quite frank this Forum is well off without going back to the early morrrowind mentality phase.

Thread Reported, this is essentially a complainer about complainer thread.

This is a thread about Nostalgia and the effect it might have on our experience with Skyrim. When I posted it, I did not even have any of the latest developments or threads (or posters) in mind. While this thinking might have been prompted by the current debate it is not supposed to be a commentary upon it in any way. This is a standalone thought with observations and a call for discussion with those who experienced a similar phenomenon.

Pointing out a phenomenon of nostalgia and how it shapes our thoughts is not an attack.

If you have nothing useful to contribute other than spam and complaints, you will get this thread locked... but it will be your fault entirely. Please stay on topic... if you are capable of it.

You know, I hate people who say it, filling threads with posts that don't contribute anything, just to increase the mass behind an idea as if the sheer number of individuals who support it makes it right.

But in this case I will make an exception:

^This.
