Septims or something completely different

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 11:24 pm

Ok the Septim bloodline ended with Martin, thus the Empire is in disarray. So the question is, will the form of currency known as septims still be used in Skyrim since part of the country wants to secede from the Empire[/size]?

well the empire crumbled so there is nothing backing up spetims, and it has been 200 years so no new ones would be minted, so they wouldn't be common enough

I do not think so. Maybe the Empire Loyalists still use the Septim but I think the rest of the world will use Drakes or some other kind of currency

Two things:

One, the Empire is crumbling, not crumbled. Apparently some guy called Titus Mede took the throne in the first twenty years after OB, and the cause of the Skyrim civil war is whether the Nords should secede. If there's no Empire, there's no debate over secession.

Secondly, septims are made from gold, so it's not a question of them being "backed". Meaning they could be assumed to be worth a similarly-weighted lump of gold.

IIRC, drakes were another name for septims. Septim = dragon blood = dragons on the coin, etc.

Maybe the Nords could use hacksilver [link above]. Must be something worth a half a Septim.

The Empire is still around, but I think it'd be questionable whether or not the groups that want to secede will accept septims. They could always just melt them down, but I think it'd be interesting if we had to deal with some kind of scrip alongside septims, depending on who takes what. Might get a bit difficult to manage though.

Drakes were another name for septims, yeah. Like using "buck" instead of dollar. In Morrowind, the NPCs seemed to use "drakes" more, although the items were labelled as septims.

I assumed that the Dunmer used "drake" so they didn't have to admit being Imperial citizens, heh.

I think the idea of a secessionist currency sounds cool in theory, but in practice it sounds like the system from New Vegas with caps, NCR dollars and those legion coins. Which I find kind of annoying, truth be told.

Septims will almost certainly still be the universal currency in the world even with the empire crumbling. New septims don't need to be minted, this isn't the ridiculously inflated and stupid currency system in our world. Our worlds currency system has been exaggerated out of proportion where there is no such thing as money, it's just imaginary and just imagining the collapse of the system makes the system collapse <_<

"Drakes" are just another name for Septims, just like how you can call the dollar a greenback.

wow I thought I was the only one who knew that hehe, seems we are both on the crazy pills, people will be shocked to know that most of the "money" does not actually have any real value to back it up, a
huge solar flare will pretty much blow the dream dust off modern civilization and make us face our own stupidity. :flamethrower:

hope the coins are more shinny this time, hmmm guess I already said that, SHINNY

Ummm... there's the fact that they're made of gold. As long as their gold content is trusted, they don't need anything to back them up. Presumably Mede's empire resumed coining; if there is a new coinage, then all Septims will have mysteriously vanished, for purposes of designer convenience. Or maybe they'll ignore the issue altogether.

I mean, the gold coins you found in ancient dungeons that had been unexplored since before the Septim empire were still Septims, if you ever found any out in the open (Dwemer coins excepted). And the game didn't bother to distinguish, at any rate. It's historically impossible, but no one really cares.

It would actually be interesting if they had several different types of coin from different eras, with different size, purity, value, design, etc., so you could get your virtual archaeological numismatist on. It would be one way to signify the relative age of the dungeons you explore -- to know, "this stuff must be from the reign of King Dude, since most of the Dudes in circulation were melted down in the chaos following the end of the Dude dynasty."

Just as long as I do not have to use "credits". Not that they would ever use that term I just hate how generic it sounds yuck.
