Served Cold Trespassing

I'm at the part of the quest where you must find evidence in Severin manor. My issue is that when I enter the place it count as a trespass. This is only a concern because I'm on a character that doesn't commit crimes (according to the stats log). Does anyone know of a way i can go about doing this quest without getting that marked on my stats? If not then it looks like I'll be taking quite a few trips back to Skyrim.

More importantly where is the evidence? I can only find the key on them when I've killed them. No idea where to go next.

When you start the quest, you are given a key to the manor.

The evidence is in the safe in the bedroom directly at the bottom of the stairs.

Thanks. Must have spent ages trying to find the safe. Was sure there had to be a trap door to the cellar or something.

The key is the only way in, but it still counts as a trespass. I'm just not going to get the house on this character, oh well.

It seems like they'll never learn. When you're doing a mission on behalf of the local government, and have authorization to enter a building, it shouldn't count as trespassing. The Riften thane quest had the same problem.

Yeah, just another house not "available", ha.
