Settlement defence

Post » Fri Nov 27, 2015 12:43 pm

Hey there! I've been playing for almost 60 hours at this point and during my playtime I only had to defend a settlement once, so I was wondering if there is a way to up the frequency of attacks cuz I really want a chance to shoot those attackers again. Is there a console command to trigger an attack? Or should I raise a difficulty setting?

The only time I've had to help a settlement was when the settlement had weak defense. Do you have good defense in every settlement? I'm on PS4 and have had only 2 "Help Defend " notifications. 20 hours of play.

well yeah all my settlements are 60+ on defence so I can't be attacked now because of this?

From what I understand it is random. I have had like 10 attacks on settlements in 50 hours play time. I have about 7 settlements.

you get attacked if you have more resources than defences. One of my settlements has like 15 food and 0 defences, and it gets attacked like every (game) day. My other has 10 food and 60 defences, the raiders have never hit that one. Wonder why lol

So yeah, if you want more attacks, just scrap/store your defences.

Sounds reasonable in general, still I would like to see at least rarely, how my fancy and multiple turrets prove against some exceptionally stupid or powerful raider bands. May not sound reasonable, but as a player I set all the defences to see someday how it work in action, not to opposite. I could increase food and water production just to make them higher than defense value just to see, what will happen, but that kinda against roleplay.

A question: how it looks, when attackers appear? These are coming from far, or are spawned already close? I'm asking, because I surrounded the settlement with complete steel wall using many materials on this, with only one gate and one small backdoor, and not sure, if that wasn't a waste of time and resources.

An alternative to scrapping your defenses is to do what I did: just build water pumps EVERYWHERE. Raiders seem to go nuts for water. Just build fifty or so pumps. Also, if you have any free settlers, plant as much food as you can.

As a side note, I've seemed to notice that the more supply lines you have between prosperous settlements, the more you get bothered by raiders. I'm not 100% on this, but it would certainly make sense mechanic-wise, seeing as they share all their resources.

Hopefully a mod will come along that increases the odds of attack regardless of defense rating (defense rating should help deter it but not eliminate it no matter how high it is). Also it would be nice to see a mod that make raiders spawn outside settlements so those who build walls can see them put to good use. We won't know what's possible until the editor comes out.

You can get attacked even if you have high defence rating. I got attacked with a 70/30 (defence/(food+water) by 7-8 supermutants + dogs.

It's probably just more rare.

I'm sure there will be a mod where if you have over X defense rating, you'll be attacked by a band of behemoths instead of raiders...

It is a weighted random system.

Weighted in sense game text specifically tells us that lower defense ratio, not total number is what matters. E.g. Defense 20 vs 200 is meaningless - one is not stronger than another per se. The ratio game cares about for whatever weighted probability of attack is your food+water vs defense ratio.

If you have 240 food+water (easily achievable via 5 large ind. water purifiers and some crops) and 200 defense, you ratio is weak compared to 10 food+watee vs 20 defense.

No one knows the for ula and how much it skews the weighted chance but unkess game text is flat out wrong, it tells us chance of being attacked is reduced by greater defense ratio.

But since it is random, and we all know how bad some "RNG" systems are, many players report hardly ever being attack and some complain about too many, constant attacks.

I maintain a minimum 1:2 ratio - double defense vs my food+water and I am still attacked reasonable number of times. Not super common but not uncommon. Enough times that i really detest the weak warning system we get with easy to miss message and misc quest insertion with no real alert prompt, which I suspect is also buggy and doesnt give popup message always either.

If you want to experience attacks personally, build up your settlements and just play - regardless how strong the defense ratio is, I believe based on my xp, that raiders will attack what seems prosperois. They want resources, they attack resources. So even sanctuary, my most heavily defended settlement, is attacked a good number of times and in common frequency because it is also my gigantic adhesive factory.

I've also noted that type of mob that attacks is random but influenced by what quests you've done in sense of what mobs you've met. I am such a settlement sim player that I didnt do much main or side story quests like for BoS, and just explored for junk and cleared repeated same locations as loot/mobs respawned. So I did not meet any synths for a long time, and during that period while I was attacked aa good number of times, it never, ever included synths.

This could just seem sheer random chance, but it does seem a big coincidence I was attacked 10+ times without ever seeing synths, then I finally encountered synths for first time in a mission, and then suddenly my settlement attacks started including synths.

Last - i have encountered good chunk, at lesst 70% of my attacks when just fast traveling. I arrive and eithee statt hearing shots, or the alarm siren starts blaring. Build one of those at each settlement btw, very handy and useful.

So... I was called to help by one of my settlement. When I came, in the matter fo 3-4 seconds, before I even hit VATS key, I was:

- beaten by dog;

- hit by supermutant's club;

- hit by a grenade explosion;

- hit by some bullet;

- dead.

Is this how it supposed to work? :)

I went to Abernathy farms to defend them from an attack. Fast travel dropped me right between two Gunners. One clip of spraying wildly and a pistol whip and it was over. At least we all spawned at the edge of the settlement but despite being within sight of a turret, it did nothing to help out.

I noticed that there is a 'fast travel marker' that you can use to change where you land in your settlement,

Has anyone tried surrounding one of those with metal walls?

It might give time to get into VATS anyway.

I just used this marker for that settlement (probably Tenpines Scarp in English version) in hope, it moves only my spawn-in point, not for the attackers, and placed it in the safe spot. We'll see next time... Just hope, attacks doesn't spawn for Sanctuary in the same spot, I do, because that's the middle of the town.

I've done about a dozen defense missions so far. Typically the attackers spawn about a real-time minute after I get there and outside of the town green zone. I've only once spawned into the middle of a fight. I've never had an attack at a large settlement (like Sanctuary or Castle). The largest I've had hit was the drive-in, and the enemies spawned well outside of that zone. The one I spawned into a fight for was one of the tiny colonies. I think the enemies are supposed to spawn outside of town zone, but on tiny zones, that can mean being close enough that they're on top of you right away.

Definitely true! All my inhabited settlements have a defense over the food+water value. I get attacked even then. My Sanctuary and Castle have very high defense, ~2-3x the food+water value...which could be why they aren't being attacked, although I assume there is still a chance.
