Settlement defence.

Can the settlements finally defend themselves now?



I've got a defend quest while running around and i couldn't be bothered going there.. a few minutes later the quest was completed ( not failed like they use to ) and i was no way near that settlement.

That seems to be the case. I've experienced this multiple times now, and several other people have as well. This is a great change.


It seems to be dependent on your defense rating at the settlement though. I've had them auto-complete about 4-5 times now, and it's always been at my settlements with way higher defense to resources ratios. I've had several of them fail as well, and they seemed to all be at the lesser defended settlements.

I also noticed that after the last patch and wrote a response a few days ago.


(I have previously reduced the defences at that settlement to prolong battles and reduce the amount of friendly fire damage that missile turrets were doing.)


Settlement is connected to supply lines with ample resources available to repair items

I did a little test with one particular callout and a game save.


Help defend Taffington Boathouse with 3 different responses from me.



Show up and watch the settlers and turrets beat the invaders.


The settlement improvements sustain some missile damage which self repairs and I get to loot bodies with a successful defence notice.



Don't show up and one outcome is a successful defend the settlement notice but no bodies to loot and the settlement self repairs.



Don't show up and get a failure notice. The settlement self repairs, with again, no bodies to loot.

Is there any word on what that defense rating needs to be to make the settlements independent? I have much more defense than production at my settlements and am still getting notices to go defend them and failures if I don't make it.

I'm not sure. I really want to figure that out though. I'm going to try doing some testing on it for a while and try to figure something out. The general guidelines are that the defense rating should be at least equal to food+water production, so I'm guessing that's probably the minimum value that you need to have any kind of chance of successfully repelling the attackers without your own intervention. It's basically a dice roll with progressively better odds at higher defense ratings. I'm guessing there's a magical value at which defense tasks have a 100% chance of auto-completing.
