Settlement defense tactics?

Post » Wed Feb 17, 2016 12:33 am

Hi everyone,

Most of the time when a settlement gets attacked its a handful of fairly low level raiders that my turrets take care of no problem. But recently Warwick Homestead got hit very hard by muties. By the time I arrived they were swarming the gate and were not phased by the three turrets I had. I lost the two field hands. I'd lost another named settler when the Slog got hit by power armor clad raiders.

I think this is all fun as hell, but I hate when I lose people so I want to beef up the defense.

I've got the usual thing, walls and turrets focussed on a choke point but I need more firepower. I was thinking of using missle turrets and laying mines but I'm worried about hurting my own people or a caravan and turning it hostile. Has anyone tried using missle turrets and mines? How do you recommend deploying them?

Cheers guys.

Mines will kill your people.

But how did your settlers get killed? Only a few named ones should be able to die.

Normal settlers just go down on their knee, just like companions.

Only way they get killed is if they are a synth infiltrator while this type of attack is launched... or you shoot them yourself.

You can use missile turrets but only placed in a way that they can't fire into your settlement (build a wall behind them).

Since i play with a "mortal settlers" mod this time, i don't use any explosives at all. In earlier games i gave every settler a grenade... nice fireworks ;)

No mines, because reset area and they may disappear. I mostly use heavy missile turrets. Works great except they do area damage and may hurt your own settlement installations. None settlers and other friendly ones have died, but I did... since I have about 300 defense in some of mine settlements. I have seen posts where settlers have died, but that would be named default settler or something. They are not essential. So if mine settlements got attacked, I only look for legendary spawns, since NPCs have the habit to take weapons from other dead bodies. Caravan folks should be safe unless you self kills them.

Cheers,

-Klevs

Missile turrets are not user friendly. I stick to heavy machine gun and laser turrets. Haven't lost a settler yet

There are very few settlers who can die.

I've also had deaths at the Slog and Warwick Farm, Covenant too.

The good news is that if you have a beacon they should be replaced with immortals, (unless you have a hand in their death)

And there is strength in numbers as illustrated here.

The trouble with heavy turret defence is it can knock you and the settlers and your improvements about too.

Although at Warwick in my game I find the foes follow the road in.

I accidentally made a trap there by putting up a junk wall across the front and along some of the water on the workshop boundary.

Across the road it ended up being a little alcove that the foes enter and I put some machine turrets above which usually results in a conveniently placed pile of bodies.

Supermutants -overlords often spawn in Slog for me. Had to replay one battle 3 times to save Deirdre. Almost same case happened in Warwick with Hoptons. Triied to replay it, but it did not help, so I just failed it . Got everything broken , but all people are alive. It`s hard to save these non essential unique npc, their health does not restore ever. Deirdre took some damage early in the game, her health is at 75% since then. I gave them the best armor and weapons I could. Placed more turrets. But still, sometimes I have to replay battles, mostly when there are high level supermutants with miniguns and missile launchers. The last time they were same level as me with very high resistance.

Not sure about walls, I`v noticed that my settlers can teleport if they can`t find a way around, so I did not bother with walls. Placed 7-8 heavy machine gun turrets on the roof. It`s much better with them, but no guarantee, depends on npc`s action.
