Settlement related questions, anyone who knows can advise?

Hey,

I like the idea of settlements but there are still some questions I have about it to what I can't find answers myself so far. Maybe someone who has found answers can give an advice? Would appreciate it a lot. Specifically:

1) Do I have to assign each settler to a specific bed or not? I'd think they'd find the beds themselves but it has assignment option?

2) Do different game difficulty settings somehow affect gathered materials? Specifically, I've scrapped and scavenged a lot of materials, transferred them to workbench but they seem to disappear from there even when I don't craft, build or upgrade anything (i'm on Survival mode). I've literally gathered thousands of each material and most of them just go away, for example I add 1000 materials of various kinds to Sanctuary workbench, then simply travel - nothing else - to Abernathy Farm or really any other settlement and check the workbench and material count is already down to 600! Why? Where is it going to?

3) Settlement alerts and status reports in Pip-Boy seem bugged, often what Pip-Boy shows and what I see in settlement are completely different so I'm never sure what's the real situation, and either waste time traveling around them or assume that all is OK but in reality miss an actual assault.

4) Do machines and everything in settlements break on their own? I've had cases where I build a small settlement, one or two generators, some defenses and go away and without them even getting attacked, when I return one day I see generator smoking, turrets offline, water purifiers offline.. And I have to go around then and fix each and all items one by one since workbench doesn't have "repair all" option.

5) Do I have to really build settlements everywhere where Preston sends me to? With the issues and unknown things occurring with this system right now I don't really want to invest time and effort and materials in every single possible location until it's fixed and/or improved, but would it affect my gameplay in some bad way if I just, say, clear some settlement area or help people there and then just move on? Or do I even have to do those missions ("clear area for settlement" and "help settlement" types, I know that the "kidnapping" types have time limit), maybe can leave them be and do them some time later after patches and all?

6) Somewhere was mentioned by Bethesda or maybe some reviewer that the settlers which are not assigned to duty, like the newly arrived ones, will automatically start to gather scrap for you but I've never seen it, I see that they beeline to my food production areas, if anywhere at all. Basically, is there some automatic assignment of some work also in the game or all has to be done manually?

Hi there! I will do my best to answer your questions
1) No you do not have to assign Settlers to a bed they will find them automatically
2) I've played on Normal, Very Hard, and Survival Mode, I have not had this happen to me I think it maybe a bug
3) This bug has effected alot of people including me so I moved from Sanctuary to Castle and everything seemed fine

4) I've never had a machine break on me the worst I've had is a Mutifruit plant go bad

5) You don't have to spend any time at all on the settlements Preston sends you to just place a beacon and leave it that's what I do

6) Yes I also heard unassigned Settlers scavange for supplies but for me that's not been the case.

I hope it helps!

Thanks for information. I've had machines and turrets and even bunkers break and need repairs for places which have never been attacked. Mutftuit plants which have only stumps left so I have to spend a mutftuit to get it "back up". But most annoying thing is the disappearance of materials from workbench. I even have several settlers in several settlements set to scavenging but that doesn't seem to do anything at all. Maybe they're the one who actually steal my stuff and sell it to passing merchants..
