Settlement size limit :(

Post » Sun Nov 29, 2015 9:01 am

Hi Everyone,

so I've been building up my Sanctuary settlement with a lot of passion over the past days.

I always noticed the "Size" bar at the top right, but I thought it somehow was related to what I built, comparing with how many current settlers I have.

So now I read up on the Internet, that this actually refers to the amount of items I can place in my settlement and means that ultimately my building fun will come to an end soon?

Has anyone reached the size limit? Is there any way to see what items actually take what "size space" away from the bar?

I could live with removing my super cool wooden fence, although it would feel [censored], but I had this super nice building plan for my settlement, as probably most of us did, which I am not sure if I can even achieve now.....

Anyone any more knowledge on that?

there is also an object limit. so a specific object also can build a few times. that limit a joke. like only able to build 5 parts of junk fence. wtf?!

Could it be that your junk fences are blocked because of too much other stuff u build?

I literally was able to pull a junk fence line from the bridge all the way around to the big tree where the road circles, must have been 20 pcs at least.

Wonder if there is any way to find out what takes how much space, to plan better...

Clean out the settlement first, thats what I did in sactuarty and then I was able to build a fence around the whole town. I also got tons of wood and metal from all the trees and cars I scrapped.

So am I correct, assuming all items that originally have been in the settlement count towards the size, so scrapping them will give me some room to breathe and lower the bar? Probably overlooked a couch, tree or fence piece here and there.

well i built a quite big house in sanctuary with 2 upper stories and some plattforms and ladders from here to there.

also a long fence across the settlement where the big tree stands.

no problem.

then in the minutemen fort i was only able to build like 5 junk walls and 4 ladders. then i had to remove others.

the atillery was allowed to build, after i removed a guard post.

when the limit of an object is reached it just doesnt show up like when you are able to place some. the number in de bracet taht shows how many you could build by ressources still shows up tho.

like steel wall (2) but not showing on the screen to build. remove another one and it works.

So, that sounds like all of your settlements might be sharing those counters? :/ That would svck even more....

thats what i think.

that means you are able to build like one big house and then only limited objects everywhere else.

i have to check that out later. building the maximum at the car cinema. then travel to sanctuary and remove some stuff and try again.

by the way is the size diagram at the corner moving when more settlers come? just read a comment about its a fix number that shows how much you are able to build at that spot. but also have to check that our later.

Mhh never noticed if it moves with new settlers, as they usually arrive while I am doing other stuff. Will keep my eye on it...

Ah that is stupid. I noticed that size bar but thought it was for how big my settlement was or something. Mines almost full and I only built a house (granted a very big one). Why put a limit like that in game and not just fix what causes the performance drop.

I know...but right now it would make me at least a little happy to know, how the size bar is affected by what changes/items....any way someone with a PC version can make that visible? Or am I asking too much here :P

Wow this is disappointing! I understand an object limit because of loading issues but to make it so small seems dumb :(.

Do all specific items have a limit or is it just total?

Hmm that sounds rather terrible. It will be okay though because I am fairly certain someone will mod that to remove the cap along with obviously enhancing the build system even further with more items I am sure.

Another question that just came to my mind is - IF the limit is shared among all of our settlements, does it increase a certain amount with every new settlement we get/discover? Or are my future people totally screwed if I go ham with my building in Sanctuary hills :/

1 - limit is not shared among settlements
2 - limit is based on number of settlers. as you get more settlers your limit will increase.
3 - there is no specific limit on individual objects but structures contribute to size more than anything else.

tips-

* Try to use existing structures and natural barriers. incorperate them into your construction to keep the size down.
* Stay away from scrap metal walls as they have the most polys and therefor the highest size cost*

* the most efficient perimeter wall is the flat wood wall. structures>wood>walls>first object.
* wire fence is very low poly, use it to block your NPCs from getting stuck in trouble spots.

With the group of 5 minutemen to start sanctuary was just over half full in size and with the addition of three settlers the size bar was reduced to just over one third.

I can't wait until modding fixes all the crap with settlements- which is the sad, but, true part of gaming today. Hell, I feel like "meh, modders will fix it" at this point is practically a game design ethos.

This guy said he found a fix... I need to try it out. It seems annoying but is the only workaround for object limit I have seen... He dropped a junk item and pulled up the mebu to build. He highlighted the object to be built as he scrapped the junk; it worked.

Bethesda needs to at least double the object limit. It should not have performance issues of doubled.

hmmm not sure about some of this, but I really havent built anything except add some defenses and power next to the bridge in santuary with 2 guard towers on either side. No large structures and I have 5 settlers and a garden started. Everything else was already there and I moved it around.(the crafting stations)

My size indicator is about half way.

I built a massive 2 story HQ and a buttload of fences around the whole town, yesterday I decided to build a little open balcony bar ontop of the workshop and my bar literally did not move....I dont understand how that stuff works :/
