Settlement Trade Good Routes and questions..

Hello all

So I have spent the last day playing this amazing game and I will be nearly 14. I have been slow leveling cause I can't get enough of the new Settlement feature and I'm loving it. But there just seems to be a few things that I'am missing that I hope you guys can help me. As it's gettng embarrassing as I have the guide book and I still have no clue.

So I have started off my char as a typical Assassin, thief. So I only had 3 in Charisma but have just gotten him up to 6 through spending skill points in the charisma Special. Now I understand that Local Leader will allow me to consolidate all my junk resources and I won't need to fill myself and my companion up to the brim with junk and fast travel to each place and build some stuff. So I'am happy with that.

At the moment. I have 3-4 settlements that I'am very interested in developing where as I get higher in level and explore more I will unlock some more settlements. But for now I have Sanctuary, Abernathy Farm, Sunshine Tidings Coop and Red Rocket Truck Shop. I also have 2 minor farms: Tenpines Bluff and Oberland Station.

With Sanctuary I basically built beds in the buildings I couldn't destroy and I fiddled about with building a Bar in the larger slot to get a handl of building and now I have around 8 people living here. My base is defended with a trap and a mini gun. So all things are good there.

Red Rocket has nothing done to it. I built a prefab for a future home. I just don'e understand what I can do to get the most out of it In Sunshine Tidings Co-op I built some beds and in Abernathy I built a huge prefab so now I can setlle 7 people there. But, I seem to have a problem. How would I go about defending such a large area? Sanctuary is fairly easy to defend as they have a bridge. (I haven't been attacked yet.) Abernathy and the others all have huge open areas I wouldn't want to place turrets or traps and find out that they would be useless. I recently survived a ghoul assault on Tenpines and it was hard to defeat with only me and my dog. But I felt that if I had placed the turrets in the wrong place then I would have been screwed. But, because it is open I don't know where it would help.

I also thought about placing a fence around the perimeter of the area I planned to expand in on Abernathy (and other same or smaller sized settlements.) but the resource drain would be huge. Has anyone noticed if a particular type of fence matter? Like if I select a smaller cheaper fence would that slow the enemy down as if I had a bigger one that was designed for that purpose?

Now when it comes to setting up trade routes and merchant routes it confuses me. The guide doesn't help in explaining it out. Can I have a settlement produce a certain type of resource and then have the settlement that requires the resource send out a convoy to pick it up or am I not understanding it right? I read on a post on these forums that the author has a settlement that creates circuits, electronics and other advanced high tech and transports that to Sanctuary for his own use.. As far as I can tell I can't see a station that can make them and I tried to assign one of the npcs that ran to Sanctuary to a Armor or Weapon station and nothing happened.

Sorry for the long post but I do really want to get into this aspect of the game as I think its very interesting but I just seem to be having a hard time understanding this area of the game. So I will be 14 and will be able to get rank 2 of Local Leader but atm trying to defend the settlements I want to invest in and this is scrambling my brains as resources are hard to come by in the amounts you need so I don't want to waste them on defences when they won't be able to do anything...

Please help!

I can help with one thing. Your taking on too much too quick. Slow down a little with settlements. You'll be less stressed.
